Trying to get to the front drums on my 65.
Warn Loc O Matic M3B hubs.
Looks like the hex head screws? were stripped out and bunged all up by a previous owner/mechanic on the inner ring.

Anyone been down this road before?
    Help needed...LOL

Those holes were previously occupied by extended point set screws. You may need to drill those out and that will likely require a carbide tipped bit. Someplace I saw those clutch nuts were available. Herm?

Didn’t know they were reproducing those parts. As always I’d have to question their quality but they are not really wear parts so worth a shot.

    Rich,
How did you finally remove lock nut? I am running into the same issue wanting to install disc brakes and trying to remove front hub.
Allen wrench's don't seen to grab anything inside the holes.

There has to be a set screw in at least one of the holes. Its hex socket may be stripped, but there has to be at least one in there to lock the nut. Can you verify the holes are empty by sticking a paper clip or something all the way through?

Thanks for the idea. Took small paper clip stops dead in less that a 1/8" after inserting into holes. Would you happen to know what size the set screws should be?
    Thanks

Sounds like the allen socket in the set screws is wallowed out so you can no longer turn them. Get some brake clean spray and clean out all the grease in the set screw holes and look in them, you should be able to see which of the holes have set screws. I think there should be three holes with set screws and two without. of the three set screws at least one or more should be screwed in just a little deeper. the ones that are screwed in the deepest will be the one that is engaging he locking washer. It will be the one you will have to remove or drill out before the nut can be turned. Ususlly only one and sometimes two of the three set screws will be clocked or lined up correctly to engage your locking washer. But rarely all three.

A left hand drive drill bit may help.

Thanks OI Foie for the suggestion. I cleaned out the remaining 2 holes like you said. They both look to be blind holes with no threads and are adjacent to each other.
Is it possible that i only have one setscrew
and the other two for a spanner wrench? one blind adjacent hole is slight larger than the other.
    Thanks

I am not sure about that, but I don't know why a wrench would be needed. The inner nut is setting the bearings into place, the outer lock nut is put on finger tight then the set screws are used to lock it all down. It has to have the special slotted washer for it all to work.

If it were mine I would take advantage of the replacement locknut & washer available at kaiser willys as linked above. These old jeep parts are being phased out everywhere. If you want to keep the lock-o-matics then you might want to make sure all the parts are good while they are still available.

Looking at the kiaser willys parts, there are 2 plain holes that might be for a spanner.

There are two unthreaded blind holes 180 degrees apart that are to be used with a spanner. Other holes are threaded and at least one will have an Allen grub screw (maybe 5/32”?). -Donny

Exactly on all the above post. you will have to remove the Allen screws first or there is no way to turn the nut and loosen it. After the Allen set screws are removed then and only then will the nut turn. As said above the nut is likely only finger tight, So just remove it, if you cannot turn it with your fingers just take a small punch and tap in either of the blind holes. I have one of the spanner tools in my tool box but hardly ever use it, nut is usually loose enough without it.
