Okay so this is probably an easy question for y’all but here it goes.
I bought a 1974 CJ5 with the 258 engine. It has a YF Carter carb. Ran well enough to load and unload. This sat in the building for months whilst I rebuilt the brakes and put new tires on it. Now I’m ready to run it… nope.
I started it and the carb has gas belching from the top area. I ordered a new overhaul kit and a float I figured was jacked. I rebuilt it and adjusted the float to specs and it did it again. I took it off and rechecked the float and tried it again and still have the same issue. I noticed that the fuel pump was shiny and new and suspected that was a possible culprit.
I have read many blogs and have noticed that some owners have had to install a fuel pressure regulator. So I ordered a low pressure (5psi) and installed it.
I fired it up and she purred like a kitten and about 5 seconds and the plastic in-line fuel filter blew apart.
The setup is as follows, fuel pump to the fuel filter then to the regulator and then the carb. The filter and regulator are as close to carb as possible.
Finally the question if your not asleep, could the pump be just that strong that the filter will blow in this setup, or is it just a bad filter?

YF carburetors only need 3-4 psi. Even the dual action Willys pumps often need a spacer btwn block and pump to reduce the pressure.
Best course of action for you is to plumb in a test port and test the fuel pressure.
Question for the professors here, should a YF be on a '74?

I think you're a victim of poor quality replacement parts, both pump and filter. I'd try a different pump, and of course a new fuel filter.
Yes up until they put a 2bbl on the AMC 6 in the late 70s. Lots of different vehicles used that carb, Ford 6s had them up until the advent of fuel injection.

You could also try putting a spacer on the pump. Would like to see the pump on the engine if you can post a picture.

I highly recommend upgrading to a Weber 38/ Redline kit# K380 on your 258. Night & day difference in performance. To maximize performance, send your distributor into Advanced Distributors for a rebuild/recurve for current engine health/compression/today's fuels.
The Weber likes 2.5 to 3 Lbs. of fuel pressure.

Thanks for the advice. I thought of replacing the pump as well but figured the cheap crap available these days would have the same results.
I was considering moving the filter after the regulator but specs asked it to be closest to the carb. Ok lo try that and a pump.
Great content here as that’s where I started weeks ago.
    Thanks again all.

the regulator holds pressure back, the line from the pump to the regulator is going to have much more pressure than the outlet side. from pump into regulator into filter into carb would make the filter see way less pressure.
