Prior to this years Rubicon trip I was eyeballing a CJ6.....
Well I got home from the Rubicon trip and solidified the deal!
I told myself that I only ever needed one Jeep..... Now I own 3

    Current specs are:
    1975 CJ6
    258 straight 6
    T18 swapped in
    D20
    D30/44 geared at 3.73
    restored 60/40 bench seat
    TDK 2x4 box tube chassis
    Rough county lift, springs/shocks
    All sheet metal replaced
work was finished 6 yrs ago.... only driven 300 miles since completed

I am the third owner. Previous owner bought the jeep from the original owner in Colorado a number of years ago. Included with the jeep was a stack of receipts documenting replaced parts and rebuilt engine.
Funny story, I saw this jeep sitting in the owners front yard about 7 years ago. It was factory red and sitting along side the shop. When the seller described his location I instantly knew where it was and didn't need navi to get to it!

    Tahoe Dog Approved!!!

The best upgrade for that would be fuel injection. Nice score!

There will be many changes made to this jeep as we go, but the first order of business is to get it reliable.
The jeep fires right up and runs nice and smooth. Before purchasing I observed it idle for roughly 1/2 hour while looking it over and bs'ing with the PO.
On the road test it everything was great until it suddenly just died. I pushed in the clutch and turned the key, it fired right up and away we went.
Definite negotiation point for me in the final sale, as the owner was never able to solve the intermittent dying issue.
On the drive home the jeep did the same thing maybe 15 or so times. At that point I had not yet determined if it was a fuel issue or ignition issue.
A little over halfway home, just as I rolled into town, the jeep started to stumble and die. I was playing with the throttle to see if I could keep it running but eventually gave in and pushed in the clutch to restart the engine.
Off to the rt hand side of the road was a man jogging, he even waved as I rolled by.
Without a care in the world I reached down and turned the ignition key, the jeep fired right up, followed by the largest backfire I have ever heard in my life!
This backfire was similar to a 300 win mag...... The man jogging immediately dove into the bushes thinking someone was shooting at him.....

I reached into my shirt front pocked and dug out my earplugs from work..... the exhaust note was now considerably louder than before!
Some diagnostic research leads me to believe that the engine is not starving for fuel, but the jeep is suffering from ignition issues.
After looking into sourcing questionable quality parts, I decided to just swap to an HEI ignition system.
Of course the muffler is going to need some help too.

Yes Sir.......Most definitely was ' Loading Up ' on fuel. That 258 will run forever , when you get the Ignition system Right. Really good score .......I'm partial, but I think that 1975 was the best year !

Does it still have points? I chased a similar problem with my jeep years ago. It ended up being a bad condenser. I even did the same thing to my muffler. Being the frugal guy I am I hammered and welded it back together. Just retired that muffler last year.

That's a great starting point for a "big" jeep, all that room under the hood for activities! That would be sweet on some 37's!
