I am trying to make sense of this fuel gauge wiring and sorely need help. (I have searched the forums and found much helpful info but nothing specific to my question.)

It’s a 1955 cj5 with the original King Seeley cluster. I’ve converted to 12v and intend on hooking up a voltage regulator to replace the old one on there but I need be sure of which posts to put the right wires. I just can’t make sense of the original wiring as it was all cut up before I had it.

In the photo below, does it look like the instrument voltage regulator is wired wrong to the fuel gauge?

I ask because in the service manual wiring diagram for the early Cj5’s it shows the sending wire from the tank hooked up to the post that does not have the connecting metal strip but on my gauge the wiring running from the regulator is hooked up to that post.

Happy to clarify and add more pics if needed.

That does not look right, not even close. No idea about all those wires going to the fuel gauge power input  The output from the regulator does need to go to both gauges as you observed, re-wire per the manual.

Thank you, Howard and Twin. That helps me out greatly. Now to try and preserve this classic old cluster. Really hoping to preserve it.

How are you dealing with the 6V fuel and temp gauges to convert to 12V? Swapping in later 12V Stewart Warner gauges?

I’m still in the process and have not hooked up the fuel/temp gauges yet but I have tested the output in the voltage regulator. I’m using a Drok adjustable output voltage regulator. It allows me to fine tune the output voltage to the needed 5.5 volts. In the picture below the two black wires are ground. The red wire is the hot wire in with 12v and the yellow wire is the 5.5 volt out.

I have a couple of these for non-jeep related projects but I've thought about using them as an instrument regulator- for the price of these things on Amazon it's kind of a no-brainer to use these rather than buying the components & building one.

Indeed. I’m surprised at the low cost. Time will tell. When I get out and driving around for longer than a few minutes at a time I’ll be interested to see how it performs/how warm it gets, etc.

Worked up the courage to wire it all in and see if anything would fry up. All worked well. The fuel gauge did go up a hair, but there is barely anything in the tank. But I think it is functioning.
