Will one of the new “Asian” t90 shift towers with cane fit onto a t86? Need a proper cane and at least to rebuild the detents in mine and thought a spare would be nice.

    Thanks

I have a T86 in a 66 Dauntless I am parting out. I have already promised that transmission to another forum member so it is no longer for sale, but I don't mind investigating to see if I can answer your question.

When I first looked at the Jeep I actually thought it had a T90 because of the shift tower, but saw it was a T86 once l I cleaned it enough to see the casting on the case. I think the shifter is the same, but I am not 100% sure of that. I'll take another look at it tomorrow.

Thanks Oldpappy, I appreciate it. Found an 86 tower on Facebook, but at 250 I was hoping to find something else.

Found the below thread on a similar question. It appears to be a common practice to rebuild a T86 using T90 internals and using a T90 shifter. This makes sense because parts for the the T86 are difficult to find due to the short time it was used in Jeeps (just a couple of years). The discussion doesn't answer the question of whether the T90 shifter will work with T86 internals, and some comments seem to indicate the shift forks may differ, however a couple of people in the discussion mention finding a shifter marked as T90 on their T86, so the tops will fit.

I suggest you look inside yours to see whether it has T86 or T90 gears.

It is easy to spot the difference. On the T90 the first and reverse gears are spur gears.

On the T86 all of the gears, including first and reverse are helically cut gears.

From the Novak site I find this:

"The T86 is very similar in appearance and build to the Jeep T90, and these gearboxes can be confused with each other on first glance. The T86 will typically be cast with "T86AA" on its case. Also, upon internal inspection, one can confirm it as a T86 in that all gears are helically cut, including the first mainshaft gear."

Thanks. I saw about similarity and gears, missed where they discussed tops being used-if not interchanged.
