The 258 with a wide ratio T-18, fuel injection and and HEI would be a perfect setup. I miss my '75.

I have untested opinions on the NR T18.
With the D18 I think the WR T18 seems to work great because you also have the overdrive option.
But with a D20 I expect the NR can be a big plus to help keep the engine within its power band.
Thinking the NR T18 should tremendously help keep the engine at optimum rpm when driving through variable mountain grades.
Anyone have actual experience with driving NR T18’s ?
Also the 4.02 x 3.73 final drive gives you a nice slow 15/1 gear for use in parking lots.

That is a whole other ball of wax. I had a '75 with the wide ratio T-18 and 3.73 gears. I never lacked for power or speed on the highway.
I went out with a guy that had a '76 or so and thought dirt roads was wheeling. I said lets go here. On the way out, he didn't want to drive
over a particularly rough area. I get in and put it in first, thinking it is compound low and big surprise. There was no crawl speed. Well, that was
my first experience with an NR T-18. Never again.

Yeah I agree and fully understand the WIde Ratios huge advantage fir slow crawling uses.
But with no Narrow Ratio experience all I can do is crunch the numbers.
It seems to me like it should be a plus at high speeds when in hill country.

I am with you on the narrow ratio looking better for a highway vehicle. What I find odd is that almost everywhere says the narrow
was used in the intermediates. Novak says it was generally a narrow. My '75 was wide and the later was narrow in my experience.
So it looks like you have to check the intermediates to see what is in it. The '75 said T-18 on the case and the top cover T-98. Not
that it tells anything. Still have to drive it or do a count. Better yet, adapt a T-19A and get a synchronized first gear and can be
found in the same ratio as the T-18 close ratio.

Yeah if used a lot on road then a synchronized 4.02 T19 could be a plus.
Yet for crawling the 6.32 WR definitely rules and being fully synchronized becomes a moot issue with such a low first.
I think with this cj we’re looking for a good onroad machine that can handle normal trails. So a set of 315 Tera lows should help with the offroad adventures without needing to go to a wide ratio T18.
    258 i6 / NR T19 / 3.15 D20 / 3.73 final drive seems like a near ideal combination in my book for a road worthy rig.

There's a 73 in the Mecum auction in Chattanooga in October.
