I took the 5 out for the first trip longer than a block today. The engine runs great (V-6 has some spunk) but I have a whine. It changes with speed and when you press the clutch it goes away (also gets quieter when you let off the gas). The faster I go the louder it gets. I changed the tranny and transfer case fluid and the whine is still there. (the fluids were milky.) The rear has a slight milk to it so it will be changed soon. I can't tell exactly where the sound is coming from (even with the big hole in the floor) but my guess is tranny or transfer case. This is my first jeep with a jeep drivetrain (last one was a 62 pickup with chevy drivtrain). I'm scared something will lock up and I will go skidding at 60mph off the road into a tree. Where do I start?

Rear fluid changed (looked good but bubbled). Noise still there. Checked tranny and transfer case level they are fine but still milky.

    Nature of the beast.

It'll quiet down if you rebuild the trans/t-fer. Changing the fluid prolly will help too.

The D18 isn't known for being quiet. ;)

<shrug> Dunno, I keep hearing that, but my 18 is pretty quiet.....
Sounds like a toasty bearing in the trans. maybe...

No, but I'm with Patrick unless I'm in low range on the transfercase, you can't even hear mine, and before you say it, yes even with quiet mufflers.:D

The T14's make a god awful noise when the front bearing starts to go, mine was so loud before I rebuilt it that you could hear it above the rice rockets a block away, and on the interstate it would drive you out of the vehicle.

When I got my Jeep it had a gear whine that got louder the faster you went. I swear as you drove, it just got louder and louder like it was gonna blow up. It was the transfer case intermediate shaft bearings. Replaced those and it was 95% gone. Now 6 years later I get a little gear whine at cruise that changes pitch when I let off the gas and coast. I think it is the same thing, intermediate shaft showing a little wear.

When I had the 3 speed it was a pretty easy fix with the transfer in place, with the 4 speed you gotta pull the transfer. It's not to hard to drop the transfer pan and check the shaft for play.

Thanks for the help. Looks like I need to pull the tranny and transfer case and replace bearings. And I was hoping to drive it some but better do it now before it is to late. Thanks.

Guess all the ones I've been in (that I paid attention too) were loud. Didn't pay attention to Animal, too much talking going on.

You said when you push in the clutch, it goes away. Are you pushing it to the floor or just about an inch? Could be throwout bearing noise. My '78 has it. Just another thing to fix.

Thanks Barry, forgot to add that, anytime pushing in the clutch changes the noise you gotta think throwout bearing.

I pushed the clutch trying to change the noise and it only goes away (changes) when the clutch is pushed all the way. It goes away for a split second when you let off the gas too. I don't think it is the throwout bearing but if I'm doing the tranny might as well do the clutch. Next question is what tranny do I have? One book says T86AA and one says T14. I'd like to order the parts before I get home (in GA) so I can fix it when I get there. The drain plug is in the front on the passenger side. I'm going to go through the transfer case too. Does it have a 1-1/4" intermediate shaft or 1-1/8"? The jeep is a 70' V-6 with floor shift.

The original transfer for that year should be 1 1/4" shaft. You can see the shaft at the rear of the tcase, so it is easy to measure and verify.
