I'm in the process of starting the BDS 2 1/2" lift on my '71 CJ-6 fire truck. In the course of pulling things off, I counted a total of 15 leaves in the rear leaf packs (there was also a worn/non-functional air bag setup on the rear when I got it).

Aside from the spring packs on the rear of the two CJ-10a aircraft tugs I used to own (which were MASSIVE), these springs are thicker/bigger than any other Jeeps I've owned.

Can anyone top 15 leaves for H.D. CJs? My only thought may be the rare vehicles equipped with ag/excavation implements.

My M38A1-C also had OEM coil spring 'helpers' on the axle to support the anti-tank gun. I removed them.

Not sure how many leaves, but it is definitely a "hardtail."

I think my 70 originally had 15 in the back. I swapped to a BDS 2.5 and never looked back.

I fully expect it will ride better with the BDS set-up, as the rear springs were ginormous, and the front springs are riding on the bump stops. :D

I used to have a 71 Renegade II and it had super heavy duty springs...I'm thinking 12 leaves but I could be wrong.

I have a Willys Wagon that has a 15 or 16 leaf rear spring pack. The leaf pack at the U-bolts is about 8” tall.
For CJ’s, I like the softest 5 leaf 2 stage spring pack. It rides nice and flexes well. I do get rubbing in the inner rear fender wells though.

My friend had a Fire House C J Flat Fender with a lot of thin spring, they too were down on the stops, the only suspension was the air in the tries.
