When I built my NOS Military short block surplus motor I used my stock F 134 parts, I was surprised to find crud so thick in the oil pan that I had to scrape it out and wash it out and scrape it again, the oil that stays in the pan was solid in the bottom of the pan, it took a lot of work to get it clean as new.

Did the engine you took apart have an oil filter? I had the oil pan off an F head that did not have a filter and it was as you described yours. The other thing is perhaps the engine hadn't been rebuilt since the non-detergent oil days.

It did, Ken, but I don't think it was changed very often, it was solid in the valleys that never are drained. The motor you saw was the motor that the PO put in after the original motor seized up because of a leak in the oil pan. One of the spot welds in the oil pan armor let go and the oil leaked out and the motor seized.
