That is correct, the line comes from the oil gally right under the fuel pump to the filter then to the timing cover via a rubber flex oil line. the size of the line is important I think I read somewhere; it controls oil pressure I think is what I read. Someone will chine here ,I hope , that understands better that me. The correct filter is important too, the wrong one will drain all the oil out of it and you will not have oil pressure [IMG]until it fills back up, it has been discussed. I was hoping the picture would shoe the filter better. Rick

From the factory, the spin on was also located as shown to the rear of the alternator.

Starting around ‘64, the Tuxes had a spin-on filter mounted at the top of the engine, right of center, with the threaded end facing down. They also used a radiator clamp to steady the filter to a part round support.
I’m guessing the location was changed from up on top to low behind the alternator because of the addition of the emissions air pump on the later engines (top photo in post #3). Post #2 shows the early top version position.

I'm curious how filter orientation affects oil dipstick reading. My filter setup, same as Rick's, drains back to the crankcase when the engine is shut down. I would imagine the horizontal setup does that less. Not sure about the cartridge filter. I know if I put the specified number of quarts in for changing oil and filter my dipstick reads over full. I wonder if that reading is artificially high since a portion of oil is tied up in the filter when the engine is running, whereas a no filter or horizontal filter would have less change when the engine is running.

FWIW. This shows the same oil return as Rick. I don’t have the answer on the third line from the oil filter. No fuel pump shown here. Mine is electric. 60 CJ5.
