Has anyone had any problems with the type of hitch that is in the pictures? I am mostly putting my CJ5 back to original, with a few minor exceptions, and I like the looks of the early type hitch. I found one on Davey's Jeeps but unfortunately he won't ship. That's were these pictures are from. I have a 5X8 trailer that I use occasionally and it would be good to be able to pull it with the Jeep. I will be posting a want ad later if there are no known problems with these older hitches. Thanks. 1975 CJ5 hitch 2.jpg 1975 CJ5 hitch.jpg

That is the correct hitch for your 73. No problems towing a 22 foot boat... just stopping. Would not do it again. Just don't overload trailer.

If the ball seems too low, you can unbolt the tongue and flip it. Better clearance off road.

Inspect all the welds. I ripped mine off once or twice. I this was at least the 2nd time because the straps were moved out after the first time.

This happened on a farm. It's fine for anything you would want to pull on the highway.

Thanks for the replies. I will put an ad over in the forsale/wtb section and see if one turns up.

I have this hitch and no problems with under 1000 lb trailers. I have power disk brakes (D30) on the front of my '71.
The 'diagonal' gusset and body clip are missing in the photo. I think these are often forgotten parts.
When the fuel tank was moved to the rear (in '70 1/2), the heavy diagonal members had to be replaced with the gusset.
Here's the complete arrangement per the FSM.
