My glove box latch works, until I mount it to the glove box door. Then it jams up when I use it.

Is there a trick to mounting it correctly so it works? Maybe I'm missing a spacer or gasket or something that would allow the screw to be tightened and still allow the latch to function?

Mine looks like this, but is in better shape.

Both my 71 and 69 had sticky glove box latches. I soaked mine in Acetone for a day or so, a ton of gunk came out. Put back together with a little quality lube and no problems.

The striker should have elongated slots to allow forward adjustment. Right now by your description it is to far back causing the binding. Do you still have the two rubber bumpers? You could try to cut them down, but if the striker plate is adjusted, the bumpers will not be a problem.

I have new rubber bumpers. They are a bit long but they are not the problem.

The problem is when I press the button it does not pop back out properly. This only happens when the screw on the back of the latch is tightened.

It seems like the front chrome cover is somehow jamming against the glove box door and this is causing the jamming. If I loosen the screw the jamming stops, but then the latch rattles in the door opening.

Maybe I just need a new latch. Any idea where to buy one?

As stated earlier, a good cleaning and light oil will often improve the working of these latches.
Some ‘60s and early ‘70s Mopar products used the same latches, as a possible source for a replacement.

They pop up on eBay, along with original Jeep logo keys, ignition tumblers, etc.
Even after all this time, still NOS parts out there!

I purchased the Rugged Ridge Latch: https://www.amazon.com/Rugged-Ridge-11813-11-Steel-Button/dp/B001FANRAO
It was rusty right out of the box:

So I tried the NOS Glove Box Latch from EBay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/4040073709...pryJSrbs4E9OJyaO8bTlHOIS+H|tkp:Bk9SR_6gj4amYQ

It looks just like the original plus it has a key:
    upload_2023-1-13_8-24-50.png

It did not come with the mounting sleeve or screw (the Rugged Ridge lock did) so I reused my original:

Tightening the screw caused the lock to bind, just like my original lock. I added a modified washer inside the sleeve so the screw would not tighten the sleeve so much. I still had to "adjust" the screw a bit to make it work.

In the end I kept the keyed lock because it works better than my original lock.

    Hope that helps someone.
