Transfer Case Issue

I’m doing my first t/c rebuild on my D-18. The previous person who rebuilt it for me did something wrong and the intermediate shaft destroyed the needled bearings.

if upgraded to the tapered bearing intermediate shaft and gears supplied by Herm.

when installing the intermediate gears and shaft, spinning the gears is very rough and clanky. When fully seated, the shaft binds up the gear and they lock up completely.

I spun my brain all night and couldn’t figure out the problem.

I counted the output gears: 29 teeth
Intermediate gears supplied by Herm: 26 teeth

my guessing that’s my problem?

 

Yep, 29 tooth and 26 tooth gear sets do not mate well in an exchange. Get the 29 tooth compatible gear from Herm. Those are the stock gear set for a 59. If you gave Herm the year, it's his mistake.

 

Ya got Hermed. Return it to him .buy the AA kit and send your gear to Mcruff to be machined.

 

My AA kit destroyed the bearings in about 10k miles, I got rid of it and went back to a stock gear.

 

I don't have experience with the AA kit, but have no reason to doubt a good !-1/4" Novak intermediate shaft and good maintenance.

 

Call Herm, you got the wrong gears. He did the same thing to me last year and made it right as soon as I let him know.
