Those are very interesting. I did not know they made those. Would make a good auto parts cleaner or empty brass cleaner. Thanks for sharing.

 

I had a roommate right after we got out of high school that was rebuilding his Yamaha 250 and thought it would be a good idea just to clean the parts in the dishwasher. Turned the white plastic a grungy black. After we moved out, we got a furious phone call from the landlord. Oh well, just another lesson learned.

 

For general parts cleaning, Dawn dishwashing detergent, or mineral spirts/paint thinner.
I also have a 5 gal bucket of dry cleaning solvent that works really well. I use that very sparingly.
My nephew works in a manufacturing plant, and they use “Ozzy Juice” in their heated parts washer. He took a motorcycle case full of corrosion in for me. The case was returned looking like brand new. My brother now uses that stuff in his parts washer.

The orange bottle cleaner from the dollar store works on mild grease and dirt. You can buy either the spray bottle or a gallon jug refill for a buck. I would buy a few gallons of that and some Dawn dish soap mixed in to try.

 

We used TCE for cleaning of aircraft parts up to the early 80's. No gloves or PPE. TCE started showing up in the well water on the south side where all the aircraft maintenance took place.

The TCE had percolated in to the ground water. Turned in to a bit of a Super Fund operation. Lots of money paid out in lawsuits.

Had my hands in plenty of that stuff. Cleaned grease real well though. Drank gallons of that water a day for couple of years. As others have said, gasoline for me
as a youngster. Used a pan and filled er up with ethyl. Smoked and cleaned parts. Now you know whats wrong with me...lol. I use lacquer thinner and buy the jumbo
size Dawn bottles for parts cleaning now. Also, keep a spray bottle of water with a good mix of Dawn for putting out small fires or wetting down things I don't want
to burn. Such things as brazing or soldering copper lines in tight places near studs, joists, drywall and in attics.

I find that using a good heat gun on freshly painted small parts works well. I use Krylon Fusion paint. No bubbles and you can handle the baked part after cooling down.
I usually put the baked parts on the next day though not necessary. The paint adheres well.

 

I started working in a shop in 72,' and OSHA just went into effect 6 months prior. As we all know, the shops are safer nowadays but still have a long way to go. Please don't take that wrong. I could do away with most of the regulations if humans used more common sense and compassion for their fellow workers.

We did hard chroming of precision parts and all the associated machine work. We would use beeswax to mask the parts and gasoline to strip it off. I bitched at the foreman and told him the gas gave me a headache. His reply was you would get used to it. He died of kidney failure 2 years later.

The first time I smelled MEK, I dropped to my knees. After a month or two, I could not smell it, and I still can't to this day.

We had a hot dip tank Trichloroethylen tank, and I found it fantastic to clean my motorcycle parts, nothing like it. 10 years later, they outlawed them after all the guys in the aviation industry started dying from kidney failure.

I still see 1,1,1-Trichloroethane in aerosol cans (contact cleaner, etc.) and guys cleaning Permatex off their hands with it.

I oversaw a ship overhaul in South Korea about 25 years ago. They had it in the specification to clean the generator staters and rotors with soap and water and then bake them, which is standard practice today. The Koreans wanted to clean them with Trichloroethylene, and the ship owner agreed as long as they did it on the night shift. They brought two 55-gallon drums down! The following day I came in; both drums were empty, and the generators were spotless. They would haul you off with handcuffs if you did that in the states.

 

Fortunately for me, I have no known effects of the life I've lived. Truth be told, I don't want to know. I want to go like they did in the old west. Either get on and ride or don't. Doctors don't like hearing this,
but I only go if it is something I can't tape up. Humana keeps leaving messages for a yearly. I'll get to it on my own time. All I take is a hand full of vitamins each day.


They knew about lead, asbestos, teflon, agent orange, glyphosate , PFAS, nuclear tests and on...Calculated risks for calculated rewards. We are all just cannon fodder. Follow the money...I'm done.

 

How many people burped gasoline as part of the siphon …

i remember washing parts in gas, etc. lots of that, diesel or gas now and then currently, dollar store awesome, dawn, etc. what ever is on hand. Usually dollar store awesome first with a plastic brush.

1989/1990 ish …. i will never forget drinking a mouth full of leaded gas trying to get fuel from one tank in the powerwagon to another to get the prime when the switch went out … and i swapped the hoses around after gagging out.

sat in class after lunch, sick, high, dazed, burping fumes…

ug. Never forget.

Just the fumes from gasoline would likely not be good for you. As a kid I had a second cousin about my age who liked to sniff gasoline. More than once they found her passed out behind the car with the gas cap off. Got to where every time anyone went to drive away in the car they would check behind first to make sure she was not passed out back there.

 

I liked the smell of gas too as a teen. But only because it reminded me of working on old cars with my dad.

Exposed to a lot of other toxins too, one way and the other, over the years. But my exit plan is to be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning fuel...
