How does one check how aligned the bell housing is to the center of the crank? I remember a post about this not too long ago.

I want to check it when I do my bell housing swap.

Dial indicator on the crankshaft and indicate the indexing hole in the bellhousing. Rotate crankshaft and take readings.

Yup. I would check concentricity to the shaft but also the perpendicular, parallel to the face(s).

Had an experience with this in a 4-speed jeep, spent thousands on needless transmission work. In the end a "beer can" shim cured the problem.

Friend of mine just went through this on his el Camino. Had to buy special alignment pins that allow you to adjust the bell in relation to the crankshaft. I learned something through it.
