A year or so ago, I took the roll bar to a shop to have new base/mounting plates made and welded to the roll bar. They made them the exact size as the old ones that I took in.

I don’t remember there being a gap like this between the roll bar mounting plate and the side of the Jeep body where they bolt on. There may have been, but it was four years ago when I took this apart and I didn’t get any pictures of this area.

Would someone be able to take a look at their roll bar and see how flush it sits with the side of the Jeep? This has been driving me crazy all morning. New plates are identical to the originals, welds seem to have been in the same spot as well. Maybe this gap was always there.

    thanks all!

I have a '71 with a similar roll bar. The gap you see is similar to mine when unbolted. There should be spacer bushings at some of those locations so the body sheet metal doesn't collapse when you tighten the side bolts. I'd get or fab spacers just long enough to allow the base plate to pull out some so it's flush with the inside of your body lip.
Remember, Jeep didn't design tight tolerances on parts like these. You might drive yourself crazy trying to duplicate non-critical dimensions from any two old Jeeps. Make it fit or work to your standards. (y)

Mine is all the way against the side of the step for the top. Maybe you need to spread it out?

Thank you so much! It was driving me nuts and the spacers are a great idea! Mines a 71 also!

Use spacers on the body side and use large washers or the best is a backing plate on the underside.
