I have been working on my '61 CJ5 for a little over a year now and have finally got it running, sort of. It will only run at half choke. I cleaned everything and put in a kit but no change. I am not a carb man so after tearing this thing apart 4 times I am ready to throw in the towel. Where could a guy send this thing to have it rebuilt or exchanged ? I have heard bad things about replacement carbs and would like to stick with the Carter.

Could be. If over-torqued the flange ears may be bent.

If you've tried four times, then I say the carb doesn't have any life left. I fought the same problem with mine, but I gave up after three tries. I picked up a Solex. It worked great right out of the box. The vendor I used isn't around anymore, but this one has good ratings.

Amazon.com: KIPA Carburetor fit for Jeep F Head 4-Cylinders Engines Willys CJ3b M38A1 CJ5 F134# 17701.02 923808 With Gasket & Carbon Dirt Jet Cleaner Tool Kit Durable : Automotive

I think it's probably a better choice than trying to get yours rebuilt or buying another in unknown condition. Given it's amazon, they'll probably take it back no questions asked if you're not happy.

I would rather stay with the Carter but that price sure looks good. Kaiser Willys wants $300 plus shipping to rebuild mine.

I would highly recommend giving the solex a try. If I remember correctly, it bolted on in about 5 mins. It really made a world of difference. I eventually changed out my engine to a V6 and sold the Solex to another member. I think it's still on his Dad's jeep.

    C-Dub,

IMHO - Rather than Kaiser Willys you would be better off, both in price and quality of work, getting your carburetor rebuilt by "ScoutPilot" as already mentioned. There is a reason why he is mentioned every time someone needs a carburetor rebuilt, he does it right.

That looks like a really useful site. A little hard to read though, photo is a little blurry.
Is there some where on line all the text is available? Thank you

    Thank you,
BrianP rebuilt my YF in summer 2009. I should have the original documents and I have access to a better scanner so I can see about making it better. is it one page in particular or all?
