I am looking at a 1961 CJ6 with a 4 cylinder engine. I would like to put a chevy 350 in it. Should I reinforce the frame because of the increased horsepower? If so what is the best way? Thanks-Don

    Hi Don. :)

Re-enforcement is usually more a function of preventing frame warping/cracking from getting into off-camber situations involved in things like rock crawling. Of course if you're intending to drop a hotted up LS1 in there & turn in 10 second passes at the local strip then you might be in a power band where other factors come into play :D

Be aware however that putting an eight in an early "short nose" CJ is a considered by most here to be non-trivial exercise, there will be mods required for the radiator placement and, especially for a chevy disributor, firewall hacking.

What's the intended use of your jeep? Depending on that some mods are desirable, some not.

    Pics?

It is a pretty strong frame compared to the frame used on flat fenders up until 48, and plenty of those have had V6 and V8 engines swapped in without reinforcement, but it really depends on the intended purpose of the Jeep.

There isn't a whole lot of difference in weight between a F-134 and a SBC so weight isn't an issue, but the increased horsepower makes a brake upgrade a real good idea.

As per Howard, if you are not going to be rock crawling with it, the frame will likely be fine as is. That said, I prefer to box them on the inside at least back behind the rear spring hangers along with boxing the front frame horns. You will likely be doing the latter anyway as I see Saginaw in your future if it isn't already there. And yes, either 11x2 drums or discs for the brakes.

If you're planning to use the stock transmission, I'm going to have an adapter for sale soon.

A v6 in these jeeps is a really good fit for a driver. Not saying a v8 isn't fun... well the install is less fun.

My first questions would be what do you plan to do with this Jeep and why do you want to put a Chevy 350 in it?

I think Steve McQueen has something to do with this. :)

The F-134 in my CJ5 will push it to 60 MPH which is a lot faster than I want to go in a Jeep.

Welcome from Michigan. Everything depends on what you plan to do with your Jeep. I use mine for Forest Viewing, and Cruising the two-lane blacktops to town and back, so my F 134 is good for me. Good Luck whatever you do.

While my CJ5 is down for a valve job I have been driving my CJ2A instead. The L-134 in the 2A runs great, but there sure is a noticeable difference between it and the F-134 in the CJ5. I understand the folks who want to install bigger engines, but for my use I prefer to keep things stock. I love the little four cylinders, and they have plenty of power for what I use a Jeep for. Were I into more serious off road use I would probably want a V6, but I just use a Jeep to run around my farm, drive down country roads, and get around in the back country trails along the trout streams I fish.
