Early 44 Trac Lok's used a roll pin to keep the shaft in. This was found to be a weak point on the diff, as the shaft would begin to move in the carrier, breaking the roll pin and allowing the shaft to come out and contact the pinion, causing catastrophic failure. The fix was to move to the C clip retainers or a special screw in bolt on other models.

It is interesting the locker manufacturer doesn't clearly state that the shaft design will only work in one style carrier and/or offer a fix..

 

In my case, I don't know what the fix would be. There's not enough room to put in snap rings like the stock setup. My homemade solution works, but I worry that I've weakened an already weak part.
Probably a moot point, as I'll be putting something else in over the winter.

 

standard open cases would do the same thing when a Lock-Rite or similar was added under heavy use. Our fix was to machine the roll pin boss flat, then drill and tap the roll pin hole for a 12 point headed pinion shaft retaining bolt. The solid shaft eliminated the issues.
