    You can be tdc but on the wrong stroke. Installing the distributor you must be on compression stroke its easy to be 180 out. Pull the #1 plug and put your finger on it while bringing the engine around. You should feel pressure.

    Yes I’m on the compression stroke that is one thing I’m positive on.

    Turn it around anyway- just for fun. 10 minutes of wrenching.

    I had very similar experience with a blown head gasket as McRuff. I kept trying to adjust the timing until it really blew and coolant poured out the exhaust.
