    Couple Dana 18 questions.

I am looking a t a large shaft twin sticked transper (d18 ) to replace my broken single stick 18. I have never run the D18 before, Always a 20 before. When I bought this jeep the case was cracked on the 18 that came in it. After removal it was aparent there had been a failure in the intermediate shaft area and the gears not meshing properly ate them up.

    Questions.

Will the D18 last behind a t-14 with 589 dif gears and a V6? I am not on the gas unless I need it to get moving and we stay out of the mud around here. Will be running 32-11.50 tires on 15 inch rims. The goal is to get her going and swap in a 4 spped at a later date.

Secondly I am looking at the replacement case. What do I need to check? The shifters move freely and are enguaging in the box, the input and out put are solid. When I look at it today I am going to pull the cover and look at the oil and gears, What else should I check??

Never run a D-18 with 589 gears, But it will do just fine pushing 5:38 and up to 3:73 gears behind a T-14 and a :v6:with 31" to 34" or possibly taller tires. all depinds on what gears you have in your differentials. Also what 181jeep said make sure it's a big hole D-18. Search this page and you will find more info + I'm sure someone else will chime in and give you a better answer. I'm new here.

Just curious why you can't run a D-18 with 5.89 gears? Or is that a joke? anyhow the D-18 is plenty stout, The big hole has a thicker casting and an 1-1/4 intermediate shaft so it is the strongest of the bunch or you can take a D-20 and gut it and use the housing with D-18 guts. There are a lot of D-18's behind V-8's and the axle gears have nothing to do with it, it's all about torque generated in the engine and multiplied in the tranny. The T-14 will let go long before the D-18 will.

I think there is an implied "I've" in Harlow's post, Bubba. The deeper gears make it easier to move the vehicle for all the drivetrain components just like larger tires make it harder.
Sorry Rio, I didn't help with your quesitons much, but obviously check for chipped or severely worn gears.

Ya, I think there was ment to be an I've in that post.

I agree, Jus know I will be rougher on this setup than on my tj and wanted to see if those in the know thought the D18 was a tough transfer.. Not like there is any chains to break. Hard to get tougher than a geared case I think.

IIRC, there is an external support/girdle for the D18 that is supposed to improve the case strength. Seems like the guy building a CJ6 at JU used one...

Far tougher than the Aluminum cased monster in your TJ. The dana 18 is just as tough as a Dana 20 just put together different to make use of the overdrives and PTO units available for the rear of the transfercase.

Double check the spline count on the input gear in the D18. The T14 uses a 10 spline output shaft instead of the more common 6 spline. ;)
