Hello, so my 1966 with the f134 and the t98 transmission broke down and me and a buddy needed to tow it home. We rented a tow dolly from uhaul and we put the front wheels up on it, put it in neutral, and went. This was months ago and I just now saw something that says it could ruin the transmission. I figured it would be the same as putting it in neutral and coasting down the road, but I guess not? I’m not sure how these transmissions work but did I ruin it? I’m taking it to a shop to get it running again, but if the transmission is destroyed then I guess there’s no point. I know I’m an idiot, I just need to know. Thanks.

Also- we went about 55mph for an hour if that matters. Is there any way for me to check the status of the transmission without the engine running? It still goes in gear but I don’t know if that means anything. Thanks for any help/advice, I’m really kicking myself over this.

There's really no way to tell until it is running and driving. My guess is, it is ok. It was a short drive and not excessive in speed. Others will know more.

FWIW, the 4cyl T98 is highly sought after.

Welcome from Michigan, I don't think you could hurt anything in neutral, should have put the transfer case in neutral too. I tow my Jeep on a tow dolly at 65-70 mph, but I remove my rear drive shaft from the axel and hang it from the frame, only the rear axel is turning. Good Luck

If it was a short trip home you should be good (assuming the transfercase was in high)
The oil issue is because the needle bearings between the input and mainshaft are fed by oil being squeezed into the input shaft gear as it meshes with the counter shaft. When towing these gears are stationary but the bearing is still spinning with the mainshaft (output shaft) so eventually it will run dry and get hot, this is most likely when going to a trail ride far away or behind a motorhome where it is going fast all day repeatedly.

But for good habits transfercase neutral, or pull shafts for a longer trip.

Thank you for the information, that’s good to hear that it’s most likely alright. Thanks to everyone for commenting, I was real worried there for a while.
