Hi Guys, I have a problem with my transfer case throwing into neutral when I accelerate from half to full throttle,(hard). It is the high neutral and low lever. Do you have any trouble shooting, when I bungy it back it works fine, is threre any harm in doing that. I am not very knowledgeable about trannys or transfercases. :(

If you haven't already checked. Look to see if there is anything obstructing the lever like carpeting or floor board not allowing it to shift all the way. Also crawl underneath and using a pair of vise grips see if you can manually engage the shift rail any further. It could just be a simple issue of it not fully engaging causing it to pop out under load. My $.02

I will check tonight about the shift rail. Floor is not obstructing to my knowledge, so you think it probably is not mechanical. :stout: :v6:

When you floor it, it may be torqueing over and hitting the floor.

Could be a busted or weak spring on the shift rod detent. On the shifter housing there is a bolt looking thing that is really a plug. Inside there is a spring and a ball that is held in place by the spring. The ball fits in an indention in the shift rod to hold it in place. There are three indentions for high, neutral, and low. On the 2/4wd selector side there is a plug and 2 indentions on the shift rod.

I have been there, and done that. It would seem that it is load sensitive, the higher the load, the faster that it "pops" out of gear. It isn't the linkage, or the little springs and balls. It is the gears... And the bearings have a little play in them as well. Nice part is that it really isn't going to hurt anything, but it was annoying to me. I dope-slapped a buddy of mine who said that the "fix" was to tie the shifter back.... Nope, there was something wrong in there, and I fixed it.
I ended up with a Herm special rebuilt TC. Works like a dream.

I agree, check for something hitting first, but if it is internally causing itself to pop out of gear, then thats an indicator something is wrong, and need to be repaired.

Definitely check the poppet ball and spring before you get too carried away. It's easy to check. After you remove the plug you can pul the spring out with a hook made from a paper clip.

And get a very small ended telescopic magnet for pulling the ball out. Won't hurt a thing to check the condition of it.
