In Truckee4x4's recent post in the thread on the JEEP side panel lettering ( http://www.earlycj5.com/xf_cj5/index.php?threads/113449/page-2#post-1708038 ), I noticed he used the same image to make his 4 Wheel Drive tailgate stencil mask that I'd started to work with a couple of years ago. At that time, I'd been unable to find a better one, though it bugged me that the 4 on that image looked markedly different from the 4 on the original factory stencils, and the rest of the it seemed to be a bit "off" as well.

When I was getting the body work on my ‘67 done, it became obvious after blasting that the bottom of my original tailgate was too rusted to fix easily, so I decided to find another one. I eventually located and bought a decent original that still had the factory paint and an intact original 4 Wheel Drive stencil.

Once I had the replacement tailgate in hand, I was able to get a straight-on high-res photo of the original factory 4 Wheel Drive stencil, which I Photoshopped to develop a digital replica of the logo. I used this image to have a transfer decal made.

That said, I think it's great to use paint to create these like the factory did, and I admire the ones I've seen done it that way. However, since I'd already used decals on the JEEP side panel logos, I thought it would be best to stay consistent, so I went the decal route with this one too. Here's the result:

I'd thought for awhile I might eventually have more of these decals made and sell them, but realistically, I'll probably never get around to doing that. So, for those who want to use it to make a stencil mask (or alternatively, have a decal like mine made), I'm sharing this artwork.

Here it is in 600 dpi, in three different formats. The correct dimensions of the logo as measured from the original are 6.5" long (measured horizontally from the tip of the 4 to the tip of the E), and 3.25" in height.

As to where to put it on your tailgate, here's where the stencil was located by the factory on the one I bought. The red line is just there as a reference to help align it correctly.

I'll definitely use these to make a stencil for mine once I get around to it.

Thank you for putting the scale on the image that will save some time.

If anyone's looking for a source for these tailgate decals, made with the image I posted above...I just checked with Christina Brown, who owns Vexydesigns.com and has been printing the 1970-83 dash VIN decals I do the artwork for ( see http://www.earlycj5.com/xf_cj5/index.php?threads/134664/#post-1471634 ). She does a great job with the VIN decals, and it turns out she makes this type of transfer decal as well.

The decals she sells of this type have a backing and a clear transfer sheet with grid lines in order to help align the decal properly. The cost is $20 per decal, including shipping to the US. Christina can be reached at vexydesigns.ca@gmail.com

    Thanks Maury!

I took your files and made a stencil on a laser cutter into Mylar stencil paper - so if anyone wants me to send them an actual stencil that I laser cut into stencil paper at our local makerspace, feel free to PM me and I will send you one.

For the DIYers here's the traced and outlined letters in a PDF on Letter sized paper:

I'm glad to pay it forward for all the help and advice I've received from members on this site over the last six years.
