Not sure how this compares to the Fireball 198 and Fireball 225 but here are pics showing how the Dauntless 225 timing cover had changed.

Two items of notable concern are the bolt pattern and also a change to the area of the distributor hole which also includes the distributor clamp.

First up for attention is the mounting hole pattern.
Somewhere after 1966 and prior to 1970 two additional tapped holes were placed into the block.
These two side by side gaskets clearly show the difference.

Here you the early gasket setting on top the late gasket.

Has anyone experience swapping these cover from one block to another ? Any Issues that you dealt with ?

Here you see a 1966 timing cover at the distributor hole along with the 1966 clamp.

Here you see a 1970 timing cover at the distributor hole along with its clamp.

Here we see an unknown vintage timing cover from a Commando. It has the extra mounting holes yet it also has the earlier (1966) design distributor hole. It has characteristic common to both 1966 and 1970. So I am thinking this unknown vintage timing cover is somewhere around 1967-1969 ?
Could someone please verify my assumption ?

Great info, I'm was confused when I got a later gasket for my '66.
I've also had gaskets that didn't have all the Oil passages correct - do you know anything about those?
How do 231 covers and gaskets compare to the Dauntless cover? interchangeable at all?

Not very familiar with 231 versions but I did find some info going through several parts books.

The 1965 /1966 timing cover is GM 1358433.
The 1970 timing cover is Jeep # 991681
Could not find an in between part number.

The 1965/1966 distributor clamp is GM# 1363853 and that changed in 1967 to GM # 1374776.

Here's another little wrinkle - that Commando cover is stamped with part number 1381626.
