Rearview Mirror

Hey All!

My mirror vibrates like crazy. The stud it's mounted on is like a tuning fork and it makes the mirror useless.
Is this original to my 1956 Jeep? If it is original I will stick with it, but if it's an aftermarket thing than it has got to go!

There is more info in that thread. The one on your Jeep looks like a cheap universal replacement type thing.

Funny. When I was looking for pictures of 56's I found this: 1956 CJ5 – The Jeep Farm and realized it's probably your Jeep.

 

The later versions of the early CJs ('68-'71?) had a cast bracket that was sort of "L" shape and mounted to the corner of the tube part of the frame.
From around '62-'68 (?), there a was an elongated triangular bracket that mounted on the frame the same as the as pictured in post #1, adjacent to a welded footman loop on tube frame.
I can't comment on the '50s models CJs, but the frame on the post#1 photos looks to be a reproduction frame from the lack of fittings and tapped holes, and numerous stamped holes in the tubular part of the frame. The reproduction frame may contribute to the vibration, as well as that long mirror stem.
Lets hear from some owners of '55-'57ish CJs to see what they have as far as originality.

Edit; Fireball posted while I was typing, and his link shows the 1960's mount I was referring to as an elongated triangle. You can also see the adjacent footman loops on the original frame.

 

This would be the correct mirror for our cj5’s (the Tux has the chrome bracket, regular cj5’s the bracket is black) Here’s the correct mounting position, it DOES NOT fasten to the center windshield safety clasp bolts.

 

But does it still vibrate like crazy?

Probably safe to say the OP is better off with the inline 4 cylinder than the odd-fire Dauntless shaker, in regards to quelling the vibration.

ADDED: If that's his Jeep in the link, I retract my prior statement. That's a newer Buick V6 3.8L according to the description.

I have this mirror in mine. No issues with vibration, even with the 225

my buddy did this to mount a newer style mirror on his 55 . has alot of free time
some welding required on mount . but bolted to frame

 

Unless you feel you need a stock replacement, you can simply get a later mirror that glues to the glass. You will need the glue pack as well.

About twenty bucks and it is removable for when you drop your windshield.

 

My mirror on my 63 tux needs some work to get it looking good again. The bracket is fine but the chrome part that the mirror sits in is rusty and the mirror needs replacing. Has anyone seen a complete mirror like this on eBay or other sites for sale? If not how about a place that will restore them.

 

For mine, it does not shake. I have the 225 Dauntless odd fire. The short bracket and the way it mounts, reduce the vibrations. The back of the bracket rests against the windshield rubber gasket. Also, having a good secure windshield frame to hood cowl makes a difference. I replaced that rubber gasket.

 

There was a Tux chrome one a while back on eBay. Haven’t seen another since.

Yup, thats our Jeep. It has been in the family since my grandfather bought it new in 1956. It was originally a hunting Jeep used to haul deer back from hunting trails in central California (Carmel Valley area).
It was highly modified and hacked up back in the 80's and then left to rust in a shell of a barn with no roof for about 15 years where it just rusted and got chewed on by rats.

It's too late to make the Jeep 100% original, so we are going for "OEM +". I don't mind upgrading stuff to make the Jeep safer or more drivable so long as it maintains the character of the Jeep.
The only mirrors I see for sale are the Rugged Ridge / Omix ones with the triangular mounts. I think I will just make a shorter standoff for this mount unless someone can point me towards a repop OEM mirror like BeachBum66 has.

 

So I tried to remove the mirror this afternoon and the stud that went into the mirror broke off, in the mirror of course.
So I spent the next couple of hours salvaging an old $5 mirror just because I didn't have a replacement. I had to drill and EZ-Out the broken stud.
I then turned an adapter stud on my lathe from some 1/2" stainless bar I had laying around. The mirror had a #12-28 thread and the mirror bracket was 5/16-24. The mirror is much more rigid now
It's not original, but it will suffice.

 

This is the correct reason vibration is minimized, but not totally. At certain speeds/gear, it still vibrates a little, but very usable.

 

I haven't driven the Jeep again yet after the new mount, but for sure the shorter arm on the mount will make a huge difference. The windshield frame is snug and the soft top pulls the windshield down on the (new) cowl seal more effectively than the clamp/latches ever could. I think things will be much better tomorrow
