    Hey guys,

Recently picked up a 71 that I'm looking to add some more stuff to. What options do I have for some more serious wheeling parts like sliders, cages, skids, tube fenders, better lifts (soa yj conversions) etc..? I'm not afraid of a little fabrication, but the more bolt on the better when it comes to things that will keep my family and I safe. I've noticed a lot of parts are for 76 and newer, or 72-75.

I have emailed rocky-road to see if they have any options (or if it can be modified) for the 71, as their SOA YJ conversion is listed for 72-75. No answer yet.

I have also tried to get in touch with Holley to see if their buick 225 sniper efi kit will in fact work on my jeep. Their website doesn't have it as an option, but in theory it should work. I just want confirmation before I throw $1300 their way. Anyone do EFI on a Dauntless in here?

Also, some info about the jeep itself. I'm currently deployed and had my wife meet the guy to buy it. Luckily he agreed to deliver it for us. Anyways, it has the 225 Buick odd fire that was rebuilt 1500 miles ago. After some research I've found that it has the T-14 3 speed, Dana 18 t-case that was converted to a twin stick, an offset dana 44 that from what I can find is flanged instead of two piece (have to confirm when I get home), still unsure on the front axle but I'm assuming it's a dana 27. Unsure on the gear ratios at this time. I'll probably end up putting some full width one tons under it at some point. I love the way the Dauntless sounds, but I'll probably put a 350 or a 302 SBF in it and upgrade the trans. I would go LS but this will all be somewhat budget friendly.

Welcome! Frankly that rig looks quite capable as it sits with a good set of hard parts. Wheel it, sort out the issues, upgrade as needed. Downtime is a bummer and spirals out. Plenty of guys do some gnarly stuff on much less. No need to blow alot of unnecessary coin.
Lots good folks here with sage advice, see you on the trail!
As always deepest respect and thanks for your service!

Oh yes, I don't plan on touching much right away. I just know myself, I can't leave well enough alone. Built a 2016 JKU we bought new. Put one tons, 6.1 hemi, full cage, ORI struts etc. Promised the wife I would do my best to not put that much money into this one

I think you should just fix whatever it needs to run well and then put some miles on it. If you do an EFI search on this site, you will find info on all the currently available 225 compatible systems. Like Rich noted, if you start to do a bunch of things at once, it may be a long time before it is operable again.

    And welcome to the site.

Yeah... I'm not a big hp guy. Also not much for soa. These little things just loose soo much respect when the mods are overdone.

    Kiss and Less is more.
Otherwise it's just one issue after another and there is no fun just driving around getting icecream.

I have to agree with the others. Keep it as is and fix what is needed. Looks to be really well built already.

Here are some useful threads on EFI/TBI....the oddfire aspect of the dauntless can be a bit tricky....
    TBI Thoughts
(and one from Norcal69 that recently did the conversion)....sorry my search skills are lacking at the moment, but we'll see if we can get them posted....

You'll probably find many of us are not encouraging of full on big builds on early cj5s...As you say, there is not much aftermarket support for big mods for early cj5s....the open channel frames don't love big builds, poor steering and marginal brakes, the OEM leaf springs are only 1.75" wide and mounted pretty far inboard along the ladder frame, and the narrow and shorter wheelbase as compared to later cj5s and cj7s is easy to overbuild on as well unless you start thinking about frame boxing and extensions, axle and transmission swaps etc. The later era cjs are sometimes a better platform for a big build. A lot of us run 33s on 2.5" lift SUA and utilize a locker or two and the small size advantage to (out)wheel many more built rigs....but that is also not to say a big build shouldn't or couldn't be done, just be prepared for a lot of custom work or a lot of money (and probably both). We'll be happy to watch and comment and help you go bigger and spend more money if needed .

Looks like maybe a D30(?) front to me. I say build it as you want, just don't swap in an LS.;) Lockers and a 4 spd would be a great addition to any off road oriented build.

Welcome to the Forum. And thank you for you service. Like most said, drive a bit and sort it out. It looks good and usable as is. But that said it's yours, do with it what you will.

I was thinking D30 also. Both axles appear wider than stock, probably wide track width. Obviously PS, it looks like HEI, and some lift springs. With all those modifications it may well even be sporting something other than a T14 and have traction devices. It is most definitely worth wheeling it as is. The 225 is completely adequate to run in the modern world.

All that said, personally I'm all in favor of as much low end torque as one can get. And an LS does make a great swap. But any decent swap is not going to be cheap-probably way more $ than you paid for the Jeep.

Looks like a nice Jeep, just plug that open grommet in the valve cover.

Welcome from Oklahoma! Thank You for your service.
The Holley sniper can be used on a Dauntless according to the Holley application page. The Dauntless is the Buick 225 V6 listed here for the '64-68 Buick Skylark. If you search for the Holley Sniper under the Jeep application you won't find it listed, but it is the same engine as the Buick.

    Welcome from France.
It depends of what you want to do with this nice Jeep...
I use mine to go to the village, visit farms around, but not to go to the big city.
According to what you say, I would concentrate on brakes, sometimes you need to stop..
And on shock absorbers, they help to stay on the road.
I just add a part (Tightsteer) to my Ross steering box, I have now a better feeling when driving.
My idea is safety first, then fun when weather is nice.

I did see that, and I'm 99% sure it'll work without an issue. But I wanted confirmation from them before I spend the $1300 on the master kit.

Oh I plan to, I noticed that when my wife sent me the pictures. I'm assuming it's supposed to have a line that runs to the intake. I'll probably vent it atmospherically

Holley won't cop to this working on odd fire engines. BJ's off-road is selling them and says users are not experiencing issues.
A member here installed one and said it was running ok, had video too. He has not updated the thread lately. Some folks thought it was a touch rough running, idle seems to be the big issue. Ymmv

That's the answer I got from Holley, and BJ's is exactly where I saw the kit. Wondering if it's work taking a shot on it. Screenshot_20210629-000701_Messenger.jpg

Good eye on that! Honestly, I bought the Jeep after only seeing pictures. Had my wife go look at it and make sure there was no rot and that it ran good. I still haven't laid eyes on it yet. Hopefully in the next couple weeks I'll be home!
