This is my Ross steering gear.
I wanted to make it work better, so I ordered at Walcks a "tight steer" for jeep after 1967.
Unfortunately, as explained by you people of the forum, the "post 1967" is for big engines, not my poor 4 cylinder.
Walcks didn't answer me about what to do, but Siminoff, the producer, answered me and told me to get the nr1 for older Jeeps.
And he explained that he has a distributor/stockist in France; easier for me.
So I ordered the good model in France. (jeepsudest.com)
I was not ready to take the cover of my Ross box to readapt the screw size, because if some small problem, too late.
I saw that they also sell covers of Ross box at 39 euros... which is the good one ?
But I am not going to order a cover now... They have a lot of parts, but I suppose for the Willys and French M201...
I would like to inspect inside this sterring box.
But I am afraid to open the cover.
My idea is to clean and put fresh oil.
Is there any risk of loosing small parts, balls...
I enclose pictures of the Ross box with number... IMG_5709.JPG IMG_5716.JPG

I did a rebuild of mine a few years ago, but the pictures were posted on photobucket.com. So no more pictures. Here is a video done by Moses Ludel. He is an author of willys jeep rebuilding/repair books.

If you are careful Alan you can disassemble the box, there is nothing inside that will fly apart. Here is one of Ludel's books, I believe he covers the Ross steering in it.

Just because when I took off the screw, no oil went outside and I believe that maybe there is grease or dried oil inside which is no good.
If there is no risk ( good to know) I can check.
Sometimes, you open and parts fall or disassemble ... :steamed::censored: It is not well located, I dont' feel able to take off all the steering system!

Alan it's very easy & fairly quick to remove the fender. This will make your job much easier.

Probably... Frankly, I never thought to remove the fender!
That was in my far past and the Citroën 2CV, 3 screws and fender away. But I am not in the mood to do this again...
Well, maybe, if I am transferred 55 years in the past !
I suppose that a Jeep fender is 10 times heavier than a 2CV fender. By the way.

I rebuilt my steering box. The bearings are available, but new steering sectors and the metal Dogs now are not made well.
I had a machinist friend rebuild the metal "Dogs", heat treat them and replace them. He also replaced the sleeves which came with the rebuild kit.
They were too small for a tight fit, so he knurled them to make them fit.

That's very clear... Unfortunately I tried to open the cover and it is sealed with a sealant, I suppose that there was bad work made areound so I decided not to open. One screw is a little bit shocked, exactly what I don't like.
So I used my air compressor to put some pressure inside, there was grease coming ... it seems empty now.
I have a "endoscope" to see inside holes, connected to my phone but I am not so curious.
I'll fill with the good oil calmly, and ok. On the road again... Thanks for help to all of you.
Next step would be to change all, not my pleasure. I'll pay a pro if really needed.

So, after checking and filling with the good oil, it seems really better.
I wait for the good 'tight steer" to have the feeling.
It is always surprising to see what a PO can do... Surprise surprise...
