    Hey All!
My Dad received our family Jeep back from a 2-year long, over-priced restoration from a professional Jeep shop.
Some of the work was really good, and some of it was... not.

The clutch is a mess. I think it needs a longer throw-out bearing and a different clutch fork...
The clutch fork has a washer welded to it (poorly welded!) where the release arm pivot hits.
The release arm retaining spring makes a loud "pop" every time the clutch is released, and the fork hits the pressure plate if you push a little too hard on the clutch pedal.
FWIW, the clutch fork has the numbers 340279 on it, which I think came from a 60's chevy based on a bit of Googling.

Can I remove the clutch fork to make some measurements without removing the transmission and be able to "pop" it back in, or does the transmission have to come out?

I know you don't want to hear this But
anything to do with clutch problems
it's best to start with transmission out
It's a shame you got it back with such soddy work

    Twin2,

Thank you for the quick response. It's not what I wanted to hear, but it's what I was expecting :)
I am going to meet with a local transmission shop that specializes in Jeeps and Rock Crawlers so I can get a quote on getting things torn down and inspected. This is work that I am capable of, but just don't have time for at the moment.

    Thanks again.

Was this clutch set-up pre-existing or did the shop do that ?
That's terrible from what I can see.

The Jeep has had the same engine/transmission in it since the early 80's.
The Jeep was a mess prior to the restoration and was missing a lot of parts. It's kind of a long story how it go into such poor condition.

The shop we sent the Jeep to took apart everything, rebuilt everything and put it all back together. The shop supplied missing parts either by purchasing new or using stuff laying around. My guess is the release fork was something they found, but I know we paid for a clutch kit... but who knows what throwout bearing came with the kit. We sent the Jeep out of state for the restoration, so it's not like I can just drive the Jeep back to them.

Maybe I'm missing something, but how does that arm stay attached to the pivot ball? There is usually a spring clip of some type on the arm. That may be some of the sound effects. With most GM throwout arms, you can remove them without pulling the transmission, the caveat being if you actually have room in the Jeep to make that happen. I like the cast steel GM arms:
