There should be something about this in the archives. Have you searched yet?

In a word, yes, but your existing top won't fit anymore. You'll also have to modify your dash since the latches are different. The windshields 1976 and later are the same width across the cowl as the earlier windshields, but they are angled back more and taper in at the sides.

    Welcome aboard!!
Yes, you CAN put a '76 up windshield on your '74... but then you need to install a '76-up CJ5 top.

    tim,

the only change needed is to drill two holes through the dash for the windshield knobs - and to add a nut/washer behind the dash to receive the treads from the knob. as you said, the top will be easier if it's a '76 and later, although my '75 with a later windshield uses a '75 top and bikini top. i added shims along the cowl to push the windshield forward, which allowed the '75 doors of the bestop to fit the '76-later windshield angle. the top/doors don't fit perfect, but i've managed with them as is for over 10 years, including 4 years as a year-round d/d.

Great thanks for the welcome and great info, if the top is the only problem its not as I don't have a top at the moment. The reason I asked is that the existing frame is fine but the window has become all misty around the sides and I have access to a good complete CJ7 windshield.
