Ok, it’s not what I remembered...
It’s some old thing he picked up at Carlisle. He stuck it to the back of the rear seat with magnets. He’s obviously paranoid about being rear ended.

My brother was rear-ended as he waited to make a turn into our high-school parking lot in like, 1976. The offending motorist was (and is) a friend of mine who took her eyes off the road while fiddling with the 8-track in her Ford Pinto. The force of the impact drove the Jeep into the back of another stopped car. You know where this is headed: Serious damage to the other cars, nothing but a bit of someone else's chrome on the Jeep's bumpers. Your dad's bumper probably would have gone through the Pinto like a skewer through a tomato.

I think this discussion comes back to vehicle use-the usual. If you are doing a lot of off-roading and "stock" is not the over ridding factor, my preferred tail/back-up lights remain the flush mounted variety. Nothing to peel off. I mounted these stainless steel ones when the glass tub went on my 3B, about 1975, and they still look like new. They do sport LED bulbs now.

Thats how it is in Cali, other than a front plate. My CJ2a only had one taillight, for example.

:) Being a Pinto that would have been a flame-broiled tomato.

Makes me think back to one of my favorite lines from Hunter S. Thompson, in Hells Angels. Paraphrasing from memory, "A Harley Davidson at speed is one of the only motorcycles capable of doing significant damage to a full-size American sedan..."

I would say to look for a section of the lens that has a kind of hexagon/honeycomb profile in the interior face.

On my actual '34 (one taillight) pickup, I use a pair of magnetic DOT truck reflector strips.

Yes. Fortunately my friend with the Pinto was always running into other people, not being rammed from behind.
