I pulled out my pilot bushing and behind it was a piece of foam-like material stuffed in the cavity between the busing and crankshaft. Almost like the bushing was installed and then foam was stuffed in to the cavity to fill the void between the end of the bushing and bottom back of the crankshaft hole it rides in. Is this supposed to be there? Is it some sort of oiling wick for the bushing? Don't recall ever seeing one of these before.

Asked a different way, besides the bushing should there be anything in the end of the crankshaft?

I have never found that in one, but your guess seems probable. I do grease the bushing sparingly when I do a clutch job, don't want a lot of grease in there.

Yes, typical. Sometimes these are felt. You can duplicate it with felt from the hobby store. Soak with oil and put in before the bushing, so the bushing traps the oil wick in the bore.

Thanks a lot for the responses guys. Despite my best efforts an incorrect throwout bearing thwarted my hopes to finishing the clutch Sunday afternoon. Ah well...
