Doing a clutch install and also having the trans and T case rebuilt while they're out. First off the old pilot bushing was cocked in the bore, ( probably what was squealing) but it came out easily and didn't damage the input. Now, comparing the throw out bearings the old one is about 3/8 of a inch taller than the new one that came with the RAM clutch kit. As you van see, the old one is damaged, maybe installed wrong on the fork or maybe being too tall? The old one has a part # of CT1178H and the RAM is # N1716SA. Any thoughts as to which one is correct for a diaphragm clutch? I sent a message to RAM, waiting to here back.

Gm used different height TO brgs. If the clutch worked before use the same height that came out. Ron

I would say the chip in throw out bearing was caused
by the last person that changed clutch . input shaft damage
    oops missed the hole
is one of reasons I mount bell housing to transmission first

I've never tried or heard of mounting the bell to the trans first, but I could see it working if you had the room. As far as the chipped bearing goes, it'd take quite a hit from the input to damage it like that, I think the bearing would come out of the fork first, but who knows? I'm leaning towards someone having the bearing clipped wrong in the fork. Decades ago, I ran into the short vs long bearing issue when working on various GM muscle cars, which got me thinking about what I did back then. So, I just compared my new pressure plate with the one that came out, even though they are both diaphragm style, the new one is a bent finger and the old one is a flat finger, which is the reason for the long and short bearings, using the short bearing with the new bent finger plate is the way to go. Thanks for the replies.

Typically the round faced t/o bearing is used with a diaphragm clutch.

So...I realize you have the Ram components but, for what its worth here is the bearing used with he Luk diaphragm clutch.

Yes, I used a rule, but close to the same measurement, that long bearing should be for the flat finger plate.
