What started as pulling the f134 and t90 to replace some seals, a worn input shaft, and some other minor things quickly went down hill...

Wow, that's a lot of thrust bearing wear. Very odd.

So now the question is... do I pay to have it cleaned up, dipped and such for 400$ or so... then 700$ worth of parts.. + a month or two of work for me.

Or do I just pay a local shop saying $2200 for the whole rebuild..

Well, that all depends. What's your time worth, and how much do you trust the shop/mechanic?

The shop has been recommended to me by a few of the local old jeep guys.. I'd trust him.

If you have the time, do as much as you can. A lot of machine shops are back logged several months, so if you can shorten some of that by doing the rebuild yourself and you are confident in your work, go for it yourself. First check with machinist and see where he stands with jobs. I rebuilt my transmission and transfer case and steering box while the engine rebuilder had my F134, as well as redid wheel bearing and brakes. I even cleaned up and painted the frame, springs and axle housings while motor was rebuilt. It took 4 months for my motor waiting in the que and the rebuild. I did not trust my engine rebuilding skills, so he put it back together and ready to install oil pump and distributor. $3200 basically turn key. Rebuilder is in Abilene , TX. Good Luck!!

Does he includes a warranty, or maybe an extra insurance guarantee ?
When young I wanted to do all by myself, but now if I can I prefer to pay a pro for a precise work.
For some works, it is better to keep it for me, I mean the work which takes 2 hours to modify a small part for a better result, or 1/2 day to clean some parts.

Another consideration may be if you're planning to sell the Jeep at some point. If you have receipts that the engine was rebuilt by a shop with a good reputation that would probably add value over a home rebuild.

PS I can't see your photos; not sure if that's just me.

Wow, can’t say that I’ve ever seen a motor look like that. Hope the build goes well for you.

Something was pushing on the crankshaft. Could be the clutch adjustment or a pilot bushing that is too tight on the input shaft. This is why I stated in several different posts that crank endplay should be checked after bolting up the transmission.
