Time to replace my exhaust system.

I am looking for advise/opnions on a few questions:

    1. Headers - yes/no - why?
    2. Mufflers - what is best?
    3. Pipe routing - right now they turn out just before the rear wheel well. I am thinking to turn them in towards the middle - hate breathing the exhaust! Thoughts?

    Thanks!

Try a search first, headers have been discussed ad nauseum.

    Mufflers, check.

Routing, we've discussed it too. Might be harder to find though.

Love the search capability! But this time this just made me more confused:
Headers drop low end torque - gain in high rpm.
Headers only lasting a few years
    Headers causing backfiring.
I was eyeing the ones available at Advanced Adaptors. But, now maybe I will just stick with the stock exhaust manifolds.
    Opnions?

Stock. When I got my jeep one of the first mods I did was intall headers. So yes to backfiring and yes to only lasting a year. But I think their longevity was exaggerated by frequent weekend trips to mud holes and the beach. I've put the stock exhaust manifolds back on and no problems. But then again I can't remember the last time I was near a mud hole.

I installed headers, had them on for about 2 and a half years now, only minor surface rust. Haven't had any back firing yet. For mufflers I got el cheapo they work great, keeps the sound down a bit without hurting any performance, and my exhaust exits out the side b4 the rear wheels also.

Headers, I would keep it with stock. Why? You gave three reasons, drop low end torque, only lasting a few years and causing backfiring.

Mufflers, what is best? Stainless steele.

Pipe routing, You had mentioned that you hate breathing exhaust, well I do also, and turning them in won’t help when you’re waiting at a red light or in line at the bank or fast food drive thru. I would keep it stock and run them out the back corner. Just my opinion.

The Jeep had headers on it when we bought it, but I switched over to stock manifolds about 5 or 6 years ago. Don't regret it one bit. Like Chuck mentioned, route the exhaust out to the rear corners so you don't get the fumes. I did have them exit before the rear wheels and didn't have too much smell inside so you might do that. Right now, my exhaust goes straight out the back and dumps just inside the spring shackles. Sounds nice, but the exhaust gets pulled back inside while you drive so I'm going to route them over to the corners in the future.
