Didn’t say it was or is easy. Just said it could help.

I'm just bringing up a question. Has anyone tried a "G-Locker" automatic locker up front in a D30? They are found in the D30 rear diff of some Volvo wagons from the late '80s. The G-Locker senses different rotation rates of left/right axle shafts and locks them when needed. There is a flyweight on the case that disengages the locking function over about 25 mph. I picked one up at a U-pull yard that had 3.73 gears, but I haven't tried installing it since I found a D30 PowrLok.
I think the G-Lockers were also used on full size Chevy/GMC pickups about 10 years back.

The G series used in GM's, also referred to as Gov-Locks are known for failing catastrophically. Couldn't pay me to put one in anything I own. Not sure how one would fare in a Dana 30 but if they don't hold up in a GM Corporate 14 bolt Full Float axle...

I have a G-80 locker in my 2016 Colorado. When locking in it has a good clunk from the axle. I don't think it's very strong and wouldn't recommend installing one.

From my limited experience working with a chevy G locker on a friend's full-size truck, I'd look into how much differential wheel spin is needed before it locks in....I am not sure which G-locker version he has, and certainly its in a very different application, but his seems to need quite a lot of differential wheel spin before it locks in, and thus it requires some throttle. Granted he has a full size truck on 37s, but when he revs it and gets the wheel spin needed to lock in, it seems pretty violent and harsh, not to mention a bit difficult to manage in more technical, slow speed crawling type terrain....Now in open sand/mud etc, it seems like it'd be pretty darn fun....

I've been a stalwart fan of locked front and rear, but with this CJ5, to avoid stressing out the front drivetrain (until I find a NT D30), I think my plan is Detroit soft-locker rear (19-spline) and possibly a PowerLoc front, set to be fairly tight, since I plan on staying with manual steering. Just trying to decide on rear axle options at the moment.

I'm doing my best to keep this rig an "analog", tough-as-nails 60's crawler, with minimal modern stuff. Even my 4.3l engine might end up with a carb - it still has provisions for a manual fuel pump in the block.

Does it have the pushrod hole machined? I had one (fuel injected) that had the cast in recess with a block off plate and mounting bolt holes machined and threaded but the pushrod hole was never machined in. A good thing to double check.

Been a Junkyard swap for XJs quite a while. Not sure how common they are. We have a total lack of pick and pull style yards around here.
