That would be the direction of my thinking, after checking the wiring.

Wish that worked on my 76. That bend in the fill tube makes checking with a stick a little harder :D

You want some real fun, look into the barometric fuel gauges on 1930's Ford V8.

A pressure sensor in the tank, a long capillary tube, and a "thermometer" style tube of red liquid for the gauge display.

I spent alot of time last summer around the gauges. When I acquired my jeep...no gauge was working. I had to investigate them one by one. Like others, I would order new gauges and complain that their readings were wrong. I finally got them all right. (Except the Omix voltmeter that will allways be wrong). The main problem was too often if not always... THE GROUNDS. A bad ground allways creates a bad reading. I realized that the gauges into the cluster (Fuel and temp), were poorly grounded BY DESIGN. (Meaning that you think they are grounded but they may be only partially grounded. I had to add aluminum foils in between the body of the gauges and the clauster to improve their grounds. You loose some ground on the dash panel, a little bit more on the instrument, and your gauges are reading false. For experimentation, I suggest you remove the faulty gauge and Ground it directly on the battery. Verify their reading only at his point. Good Luck. YH

I also run a ground wire from one of the mount screws on top to the frame. I've had 3 senders in my tank. I've burnt out 1 guage because I wasn't paying attention. All were inaccurate(senders) these were the correct ones also. After tweaking and bending the arm...I couldn't get any of them to read from full ( full tank) to empty (0 gas). It starts out at the full mark. So I have it adjusted to when it reads empty, I still have approx 50 miles to dry. I also write down my mileage at each fill up.

i dont see what you're complaining about. i have ONE working guage, oil pressure i think? fuel guage is somehow not working, so all i can do is pray... and keep a jerry can in the back.:D sometimes you can tell by the sound that it makes when you rock the jeep back and forth:lol: I'm living on a prayer...
