I'd be nervous that the bottom-clamp style would hold the battery in place in a rollover.

Just replace the flat stock with something non-conductive. I feel better if the hold-down spans the top of the battery.

Any thoughts on what one might use that is non conductive?

    4' of 3/8" x 1.5" Garolite is about $25 from McMaster-Carr, plus shipping.

    McMaster-Carr

McRuff has more experience with this material as a structural component than I do.

We used to have a plastics supplier nearby. They had bins and shelves of scraps and cut-offs. Check online for some place near you. Something like 1/2" thick polycarbonate should work too. Cut it to fit your battery top. The Garolite is nice because it's glass fiber reinforced, comes in bars, and strong. Bad for your tools though.
