Pulled the rear bearing cap and old rope seal from the retainer. Problem is inside the block that rope feels awfully smushy. I tried tapping on one side to push it out the other but it just sorta balled up in there. Should I try threading a screw in it and pulling?

some suggest just ever so slightly backing off the other main bearing cap bolts to allow the crank to 'sag' down just a bit and reduce the friction on the upper portion of the seal....
ps- its good to test how tight (torqued) the bolts are before loosening them so you know much to tighten them back to....

Yes, loosen the other caps. Use your torque wrench to put them back.

Thank you - I will try the drywall screw and if that fails I'll drop the crank a hair. So did you guys use the side seals and stakes or fill the side orifices with RTV?

EDIT: the screen on my pickup tube is pulled in and I think its best I replace the pickup tube and screen. Does anyone have a part number for the pickup tube/screen that I could search?
