Is the HEI something I can buy locally? If so any ideas?
I searched but couldn't find much info here but I'm new and still learning to navigate.
    Any help is appreciated,
    Gregg

    Might could.

    Sheepest is prolly e-bay.

If you can't find an Odd-Fire HEI get an even fire and convert it. EF HEIs are a dime a dozen it seems.

If you fill out your profile so we know where you are we might be able to help you with what's available to you "locally". ;)

I have a 76 231, so I already had the HEI, but I was in need of a new distributor for it. I ordered it from my local NAPA. You'd have to order the cap, rotor, coil, etc. separately, but they can get it all. I'm not sure on price though, it may be available cheaper elsewhere.

OK, I filled in my profile. Sorry I didn't realize originally how important this forum would become.
I'm planning on doing everything new or rebuilt on this project so I'll price it around. Carquest is doing my machining and supplying the hard parts. I'll check with them.

    Gregg,
I bought the HEI with plug wires from a junk yard in Texas for $25, works well.
There's a web site with good info and parts for sale. I think it's driveajeep.com. Not the lowest cost parts but maybe a good resource.
Also, DUI is now selling the oddfire HEI. I guess DUI stands for Davis Unified Ignitions? Easy to find on the web or they have adds in all the off road mags. If I didn't already have mine I would go this route. Not the cheapest but I suspect it's a darn good unit.
The thing with HEI is that it's well designed and works well compared to many other systems. You could just buy the parts at NAPA or other FLAPS.

So how many of us have done the GM HEI conversion? It look's like you have to be an engineer to install it and getting it to work. ACK!

I ordered mine(75 231 odd fired) from a local parts store in Fresno, but it came from LA. It included the cap but had to buy the coil seperartly, worked prefectly- $111.61 plus a $30.00 core charge. I'm sure you could give them a call to find out where they obtained it. I ordered mine from NAPA. WE'll see. But Motts directions look a little scary.

I second that.....I have decided if I can do any of this work, anybody can. In the past year I have replaced or rebuilt half of my JEEP (exaggeration) , all with no prior experience of any kind. Sparky and this site have coached me along, but most of the stuff is simple once you start in on it.

It took me all of 30 min to do mine in a public parking lot. I pulled my old distributer and stuffed a rag in the hole to keep out trash then ground down the intake so the HEI would fit...I had to grind down one bolt and will probably have to fight it to take it out later, but a button head bolt should cure that. I don't remember the connections off hand, but I'm sure it's in the archive here. I lined number one up on the compression stroke and fired it up. I opened the plug gap to about .040 I believe.

Best $40 I've spent on the JEEP

If you are still looking for one, I have one that I doubt that I would ever use. I would probably do a electronic conversion before I would try and stick this monster in the engine.
    Price? Cheap.
