I want to go ahead and drop my 304 back in. She’s done and I hate having it on the stand with the kids in and out of the garage. The thought of trying to torque the flywheel back on while everything’s hanging from the crane creeps me out. Can I go ahead and drop the engine back in, support it under the oil pan on the back end, and then install the flywheel and clutch plate/cover through the firewall access panel? Is there enough clearance to use the torque wrench that way? I’ve still got to rebuild/reseal the T15and D20 so they are out right now.

Why does the engine need to be hanging off the crane while installing the flywheel? Can't you lower the engine down onto some dunnage and then install the flywheel? This will allow good access to the rear of the engine. Keep the crane attached to the engine for stability and once the flywheel/clutch work is complete, drop the engine back into the jeep.

As mentioned above, use an engine hoist to lower the engine to the ground if your uncomfortable with it on the stand or hanging from a hook. I never leave an engine hanging from the hoist unattended-EVER!
I would install the flywheel and clutch on the engine before it goes back in the engine bay. Just so much easier if its already out.
