Has anyone experieinced front wheel hop while hard braking? I had this happen yesterday and it was like the front left tire was out of round . I am planning a complete rebuild or the brakes soon (wheel cylinders, hoses and shoes) but this is something I have never seen or heard of.

Does it kind of shudder? Could be out of round drums, grooved drums and linings, hot spots, etc.

We had some lockup issues in the Rambler...turned out that one side had the shoes saturated with brake fluid...so the side locking up was overcompensating.

Sounds like a quick brake inspection is in order. Problems like this are usually only resolved by pulling the drums off and having a look.

Update: I was taking a left turn from a stop light this morning (about 20 mph) and the front end (left) started jumping again after I hit an off camber bump while rounding the corner. the wheel jumped until I slowed to about 5 mph. I was off the brakes this time.

    This problem has me concerned.

When I say hop I mean it HOPS! The cracy tire is bouncing off the pavement an inch or so. I am going to rotate fron to rear for starters. The jump jerks the wheel and is a challenge to control.

The tires have under 5,000 miles and are balanced (smooth as glass from 0-55mph).

    Could they be over inflated?

I am going to try some speed bumps in an open parkinglot to try to isolate the problem.

The right rear brake is wet with fluid and the right front seems damp (have not pulled the drum yet). Under normal braking the jeep pulls left (left brakes are doing 75% of the braking work).

    Equipmet decription:

    New Rancho 5000 shocks

New Leaf springs (4) (superlift 2.5" with the lowest-6th spring removed due to stiffness)

31X10.5X15 Cooper Mud Terrains (under 5,000 miles).

I did rotate the rear tires to the front during the new spring installation. I think I will change it back.

After a close look I am pretty sure it is a brake problem. The right front is doing almost all the braking. The left rear is soaked with fluid and the front right is damp with fluid. I think the left front is locking up which is causing the jump. The brakes are VERY old so I am going to replace all wheel cylinders, front brake lines and back and front shoes.

Does anyone have any suggestions on twin master cylinder to replace my single?

Herm carries the kit you need to change out your MC. I think its $125 with a MC or $60 for the bracket alone.

As a forewarning though, installation is a pain in the ***. You'll need to remove your current mc, cut-back the frame boxing up front, grind the rivets off your pedal shaft bracket, bolt in herms bracket on the bottom, weld the top and replumb. You may also need to fabricate a new brake pushrod.

You just described the death wobble. As was mentioned check all steering related parts, and toe in. Since you say the tires are balanced good we'll eliminate that as a problem.

Is this a common wobble with these older CJ5s?

    Worn out steering components is.

The springs in the drag link may be worn or worse, broken like mine were.

Also the king pin bearings should be checked.

I refurbed my steering, rebuilt the bell crank, replaced springs, etc. and replaced the king pin bearins, steered like a champ then.

Before that there was signifigant wobble in the wheels. Esp. if I hit a bump.

Do you check king pins like ball joints on a 2wd?

    You could.

I've never done it that way though. I always jack up the Jeep and dissasemble the knuckle and check wheelbearings, spindle bolts and kingpin bearings so I know for sure what I'm dealing with. I always assume they've been neglected. Haven't been proven wrong yet on any of the ones I've seen.

I am going to follow your advice and check the bearings and repack while I am doing the brake job.

Did you hace to remove the drag link to check the springs?

Are the springs available without having to purchase the drag link?

Well, you can remove it one end at a time so it's never really "off" the vehicle I guess. Sears has drag link sockets. You'll be glad you have one when you try this.
