Is adding a brake booster a necessary addition? Do they offer significant help? Easy to install?

Necessary? No but power brakes are a nice addition. Some don’t like the. On a trail Jeep because if the engine dies you get one extra power assisted apply then the brakes get real hard to apply. Depends on your use and philosophy.
Easy to install? Not difficult if you have all the correct parts from a donor or supplier. If not it can be a bit of a challenge to get everything to work together properly.

With a '77, I would expect there's a kit to install power brakes. Should be easy to install. Pick a kit and ask those that have installed it. I like power brakes a lot.

With or without a booster, I'd suggest making sure your brake system is fully up to snuff first.

You may find you don't need the boost when everything is tuned up.
