    Hello Folks
Back again about the carb on my 1955 CJ 5.
It seams to be leaking fuel from the box section of the carb.
I have looked into getting just a whole new unit but this is what I have run into.
At 4WD I can only find a carb that will fit 58-71 the bolt spacing is from center to center 2 and 11/16. I have not measures yet.

Does anyone know if this will work or of another source were I can get a new unit?
    Thanks for the help
    Jason

    Solex?

    It'll work.

As I said here a couple days ago. Not like someone can change the intake on an F-head (easily) I guess anything is possible.

I had a '55 and a '60 cj5 the only difference under the hood was the '55 was 6 volt.

    It will work.

Your problem is classic for the YF carburetor on an F-head. Many times the victim (you) will throw in the towel and get a solex---which is a whole set of new problems ( worse, I might add).

If you have the YF carb, and if it is flooding (could be intermittant or continuous), then you most likely have the wrong float valve in it. The other common problem is float adjustment.

Now, I had one that ran good (or seemed to) for a few months, then would flood all the time, then 'magically' it would seem to run OK.

    and the cycle continued.

Here is how a YF gets the wrong float valve put in in the first place.

Someone gets a carb kit from the auto parts store. Yep! It's for a YF, and yep! the jeep has a YF... so ya buy the kit.

In it is a float valve, so you pitch the old one and insert the new one. That is where the problem begins.

The aperture on the jeep float valve is .076, however, the generic kit that auto part stores AND JEEP VENDORS sell has a .101 aperture. Suitable for a Ford Falcon or dozens of other automobiles, but not the jeep.

So, a good quality carburetor kit with valve is probably in order. The only place that I know that you can get the correct kit and valve is at www.thecarburetorshop.com

Jon can fill you in on all the details of this.

Now, if you want to test to see if you do have the wrong valve before buying the kit, I have come up with a quick and dirty way to do it.

Take the top off of the YF, remove the float, remove the valve from the seat. Now, here is the fun part. Take the pin that was holding the float on and drop it into the float valve seat. If it goes in nicely then you have the wrong valve. If it will not fit in the seat then you have the correct valve.

If you ever hold the valves next to each other, it is easy to tell the larger from the smaller, but until you get familiar with it, the quick and dirty field tested method will tell you every time.

BTW, I am not associated with the carburetor shop in any way, shape, or form. They are just the only vendor that has the right parts for the job.

Oh, I forgot to add. You can't set the float valve adjustment per the kit either. It is for the generic YF and the jeep is different.

It has been a little while since I did one, but if IIRC I set the float level around 7/16.

I think that is more than what is in the jeep tech manual, but that is what it took to make it work for me.
