I have had a 73 CJ5 304 3 spd and owned it about 30 years. It really has not gotten much use in the past 15 years. When I did this purchase it came with fiberglass body and had a Rough Country 4" lift. I went right through it back then to get all the mechanicals up to snuff and get those stiff springs out replacing w stock springs. The front spring pack I made up myself with thin leafs. Even with open differentials being able to keep all 4 wheels on the ground this thing is pretty capable as a mostly bone stock Jeep. This thing has always served me well trail riding, through mud and driving around on the street.

I have for years been accumulating parts to do more work on it. I have everything I need to pull the front spindles off, check the axle joints, wheel bearings, spindle bearings and then a 4 wheel disc brake conversion. I have a granny gear 4 speed I could put in it also but may wait until the next time I have the body off. This will never be a daily driver and will never be used in the winter.

Hear are some other things I have in my head.

I have some 15" centerlines w 3.5" offset and 11" width, (just kind of like that style and they were pretty cheap). I am thinking of 33 12.5 boggers. Noisey and often not round but I used to do mud racing and I have seen what these can do.
I currently have 31 10.50s on another set of rims but want to go to a 33" tire. I have run 33 12.5 BFG Mud Terrain on this Jeep with stock springs, 1.5" body lift longer bump stops and steering stops adjusted. I had slight fender rub back then at full stuff and the tires stuck out a bit.

I prefer to keep the center of gravity low so my style is to open up the wheel wells or cut the fenders. I do have a set of aftermarket wide TJ flares which would certainly cover the tire or maybe I would fab up some flat fenders.

I also like to keep the suspension soft and have for years watched the Wrangler leaf spring conversion. Rocky Road has kit although expensive would save me a lot of time from fabricating and engineering. I can do a spring under kit and a 2.5" Old Man Emu lift with Wrangler springs w gas shocks I think it was $1700 or so. But am concerned I will lose some flexibility in the springs with the arch. I could also do a spring over with some used stock Wrangler flat springs, but, I think that is 5.5" of lift!

I am just looking for opinions on the SOA versus SUA using a 33 12.5 tire and a YJ spring conversion with the TJ flares. Another question I know it sounds stupid but a friend has a set of 33 14 15 Boggers he could sell me and they are only 1.5" wider and 3/4" closer to the spring during full steering stop. Those would also fit the 11" wide rims a bit better. Anyone gone that wide a tire on a narrow track? :/ Yikes!

In advance thanks for looking at my long thread and commenting.... :)
