I pulled my shafts tonight to install the aussie locker, and when i pulled the passenger side it came out real easy, and i noticed that the bearing race in the housing can be moved by hand and almost pulled out by hand. The other shaft took alot of effort to get the shaft out. So i am kind of worried bout the bearing race and what it means. Wondering what my options are to fix it. Right now i am just going to put the shafts in for tellico, but after i will put new bearings in. So how can i fix this?? What will a loose bearing race damage??

    Thanks!

Sounds like the damage has already been done to the housing Dan. More than likely a bearing failed sometime in this axle housing's past and the whole shebang spun in the housing. (That's where the 'spun bearing' phrase came from.)

Mebbe a bearing house can set you up with a slightly oversized outer race to take up the slop in the housing? Is the wear enough that some good ol' stud & bearing mount adhesive wouldn't keep it in place?

Is this your 'new' waggy axle?

Yup, new waggie axle. I could get away with mayve roughing up the housing to get the bearing race to stay, even thoguh bout adding a fe wtack welds on the inside and grinding them down to give a little more bite. Not totally disappointed, not like this is the first axle to have this done, so i am sure i can live with it, but would like to eventually fix it. I am guessing the bearing will ride fine as long as it is bolted down.

How far does the bearing sit into the housing Dan? Does the outer end sit flush with the edge of the housing? If so, you might get away with 'staking' the outer race into place with a hardened drift and a BFH. Of course it will be a bit$# to get it back out, but what the heck. I'd definitely use the stud & bearing mount in this case.

I think the textbook answer is to replace the housing, but I know that's not in the plan....

There is such a thing as bearing race cement/adhesive. The local bearing supplier will have it. It's basically loctite for bearing races. I had to use it once when I was rebuilding an old Twin Disc power take-off on an International 345. The mainshaft bearing races were just spinning in the housing. I put some of the race cement in there and it was as good as new. That was years ago and it's still running to this day.

Very cool to hear Southstown!!! I will look into that. The race is just in the housing, not that far.

if ya cant find that dan you can use red loctight. it is good up to .010"
you dont want that race to spin at all. i wouldnt worry about how you will get it out latter, thats something you can deal with when the time comes. i would use a new bearing though to get max life befor ya have to worry about getting a "glued" in race out from your housing.

I had a race that was not holding in a front hub of my dana 30. While doing some ventilation work at the local CAT dealer I asked one of the mechanics about this problem and he pulled out some genuine Caterpillar bearing race adhesive (green). He even let me take the bottle home and use it on my hub bearing.
It's been in there 3 years. I bought a new hub in November but when I took the old one apart to repack the bearings it was fine so it's still there.
