Hey guys, on my A1 tub, there is a "well" in the floor for the fuel tank because the tank has a larger capacity than a CJ5 tank. It hangs down roughly 3-4 inches and I don't want to get it hung up on a rock or anything else so I think I might just cut out the tank well, weld in a flat piece in its place and use another tank.

So I'm left wondering if I should switch over to a CJ5 tank or if I should mount a fuell cell in the cargo area. If I use a CJ tank, the filler neck is smaller than the A1 filler so it would require some fab work. With a fuel cell, I'd just have to figger out a way to mount it to the floor which shouldn't be too hard. Ideally I think it would be cool to get a cell to mount in the original location or under the floor in the rear but I don't know if they could be made small enough to work. Plus, I don't want to spend the $$$ for a custom made fuel cell.

Can you guys share your insight????

    Thanks!

With storage space in such short supply in an early CJ, I'd be included to convert to a regular under-seat tank, rather than using the cargo area.

What about a fuel cell between the frame rails at the back, under the cargo area?

IMHO, late-model 15 gallon tank under the rear end will be cheapest/easiest.

I agree. It might take a little work, but if you don't have any other need for the space back there then thats the place to put it. A 15gal cell in the back cargo area takes up way to much space. I had to put one in behind the seats so I could move the rear axle back. Its tight, but I can still slide my cooler and camp cooking crate in the back. Really starting to want a six these days.

Thanks for the input everyone. Mike or Tim- do either of you know how much ground clearance would be lost with a tank under the floor? Also, if I went that route, am I going to have to cut a hole in the rear corner somewhere for the filler neck? This Jeep is far from stock but I don't want to have another fuel cap on the outside.

    Some pics here might help:

    And this one:

Tough to tell from the pics, but I don't *think* rear departure angle is affected much as the skidplate is about equal with the bottom point of the rear shackle.

I'm not convinced the rear tank has ever been an issue while wheeling, and that setup is the one that went to Moab and Ouray several years ago -- when I pulled the skidplate & tank from Dutch there wasn't much damage to it - some mild scuffing is all.

But I'm not a hardcore wheeler either...;)

You will need a fill...due to where the inlets are on the tank your options are either on the side like I did, on the rear ala a Intermediate, or maybe inside on top of the fenderwell (not an option I'd pursue).

Thanks for the pics Mike. I think a tank like yours would be the most practial solution. That being said, I think I might just have to see how a CJ5 tank will work out once I make the floor flat. I just don't want another gas cap in back....

Have done this Mike just get or make yourself a filler panel for a cj and gasket for around the neck. I just used some 18 ga. and took out the well it also allowed me to tuck that side's exhaust up a little tighter.
