I am restoring a 1972 CJ5. The bodywork and paint is done and I am now replacing the taillights. I have remanufactured stock round tailights. They appear to mount (2 post/bolts) directly to the Jeep body without a gasket. I am not sure if this is correct.

I can make one from rubber or a bead of silicon but I really would like to know what came from the factory. Was it paint on paint? If so I am good with that; I would like to know the correct process?

Any input or suggestions would be really appreciated. I tried to upload a photo but not that savvy on the process yet.

I believe the repo ones I got from Walcks had a gasket. But maybe I’m wrong. It’s been awhile since I did mine.

The Hall 701's didn't use a gasket, and I'd be suprised if the later generation light had one either.
I'm not at home to check the parts manual.

Sorry for the lag - I don't follow this sub-forum as closely as the early and intermediate ones.

"Last round taillight" is proper for a '72. Jeep Taillights on CJ3B.info

Both sides have a rubber gasket between the body and the light. IIRC it's a 3/32"-ish thick rubber - easy to make. I'd use inner tube rubber if I could locate some. Jeep PN 912237. The driver's side also has a pedestal and license plate bracket, held by the light bolts. Body steel - gasket - pedestal - LP bracket - light bucket. The driver's side has a window and clear lens in the bottom for the plate; passenger side does not. Two different buckets, left and right.
