I didn't get a picture of the oil drive shaft coming out of the oil pump, but that part pictured below is the part of that shaft. The shaft turns easily, so at least it wasn't locked up, but the ebay ad looks to be the correct repair kit? Surely the machine shop which will overhaul the engine has access to finding that? Don't need it right now:waiting:

Hi:D, it won't be long I'll be looking at springs:bananatool:, I found this picture while googling power steering brackets:banghead:, but I kind of like the stance, maybe a little too tall?

I'll be getting new springs, this is what was on it, would I be happy with stock springs(kaiser kit at about 700.oo for everything?) which will bring up to an acceptable level? I will be re-using the fender "flares" as they seem factory making the jeep look taller.

On my brothers jeep of which you all know pretty well, the same springs are still on it, not new and I will be having the same wheels/tires, as these as my jeep has the same wheels. Just seems his jeep could have been a tad taller.

Your ideas, experience, pictures always welcome on my build!!

Your brothers jeep looks a little flat in the springs. There are better options than the stock springs for your jeep, several companies make after market improved springs, some folks retro fit YJ springs. Do some searching on our site.

Mine are not really stock, they were sold by JC whitney years ago as "heavy duty" springs, but I think they are M38A1 springs. They have a nice stance but are very stiff. This picture is from a couple years ago.

People have had great luck with BDS springs, holbrook (if they still exist?) And like homersdog mentioned a lot of people upgrade to YJ springs. They flex and ride better but also roll more.

Just a bit of advice - I run Holbrooks on the '51 and have another set for the '49 since it's on a 5 frame. I wouldn't go the YJ spring route unless your going to wheel your jeep - the cost just isn't worth it unless you need the articulation. I would recommend either Rancho (Soft ride currently on the '49) or the BDS Springs (a bit stiffer but still good). The BDS springs are what I have on the '62 build now.

I'm kind of worn out today, but I got mostly what I wanted to get done;) I need some proper length bolts/spacers for the steering gear, and a few odds n ends to do, but I'm thinking next week to figure out how I'm going to sandblast or wet sandblast(like on my brothers jeep), or whatever; thinking even looking for a local dustless blaster company, but I'd rather do it myself;), but should be much easier with the rotisserie;)
Tomorrow, I think I'll just spend the day cleaning,

Gary and I are going to meet our middle daughter which is in her almost 4th year of medical school and she just can't keep up with her dog, so we're meeting her halfway (Charlottesville). Oh, she's in Philly, we're in Cypress(houston). So we're going to fly to the halfway point, meet her, rent an SUV and drive back, about a 16 hour drive, but only 8 for her. So there goes the weekend:( Hey, but we'll have two dogs! :worry: We have a mini Aussie and she has the full grown 85lbs full Aussie; needless to say it's a little overweight:confused:, but at our place, she'll be able to run around as we have a fully secure acre, hope she'll drop the weight(y)

I'm pleased to have saved the frame, hope it works out OK. I won't be going on trails, just around here and to car get togethers~ All goes well, I'm thinking two years. I'm not in a hurry as I was with my brothers jeep~ I can relax, and to be honest, I work best alone;)

I really like your garage. It's hard to tell from the pictures, could you tell me what your floor surface is? It almost looks like asphalt from the pics. Are you happy with your maxjacks?

Thank you! I love my garage!! As for the flooring, it was a dog kennel before we moved in 2.5 years ago. However, the flooring was not impervious to oil, and that strip of concrete, well I took up the section of the rolled out material. I do like the flooring, but I fear one day I'll remove it all. As for my Maxjax's, I have two, I could not function without them! When I don't need them, I unbolt and move the columns out of the way! I hope this helps! Thank you so much!

Haha, that makes sense! I bet that rubber surface is nice to walk on! I really like how you can store the maxjacks out of the way. It sounds like they're a bit of a pain, however, and many people just end up leaving them mounted.

My dream is to one day have a detached garage dedicated to jeep projects and a shop, but I'm blessed to have a 24x24 that my jeep and woodworking shop share. A "storeable" lift could eventually end up in the dedicated shop, but could be out of the way in the current space.

I have yet too see a valid link provided for any Rancho soft ride springs for a early cj5.
As far as I can find Rancho currently only lists one set of 1.75” springs.

I put the link up, but these are the BDS, right at 800.oo, I can live with that and the shocks would look nice through the wheel opening;)

When we lived at our old house, my husband added a larger garage to the existing garage to give me more working space, but that was lost due to Hurricane Harvey. But my new garage (the one in the pics), I'm a spoiled brat now~ and if something ever happened where I couldn't work on vehicles, woodwork would be next in line, but I'm really enjoying the jeep scene and could see myself doing jeeps the rest of my life.

leaving our old home in a FEMA boat:(, I must say that that little apartment saved our asses! When water got so high in the main home, we would have had to evacuate the first day! The water stayed that high for almost two weeks! It wasn't Harvey, it was the dam water being released.

After weeks, I got the new place up to my standards, and always wanted on old "texaco" station! :D

The pic below is my brothers '62 with the F134~ I'm having second thought about putting the Yj swingarm system in. I put the battery in Robs jeep behind the glove box which worked great and the battery is still accessible by removing the glove box. So that really opened the engine compartment up allowing the F134 to POP when opening the hood. I want my Dauntless to do the same, it will be the center of attention. So, I'm just thinking here~ you guys listen, my husband just says "nice honey":blah:

Gee, I almost forgot about the frame bushings! I was able to knock these 4 our pretty quickly;) When removing/installing the bushings on my brothers 62, we used my arsenal of tools to make a tool, but this time, with the rotisserie, I was able to use my small press! Just had to flip the frame via rotisserie to get the other side.:bananatool:

Once the frame was on its side, I put it on the maxjax lift and the frame down.

This old craftsman socket fit perfectly to press the old bushing out.

Spent a lot of the day cleaning, putting stuff up, finding stuff, etc. I had the music cranked up and bass boomin! I was rockin! Leaving in the morning as I said earlier, I'll have a clean shop when we get back, ready to tackle something to launch my progress~ guess it's about time to spend money on something, I guess springs would be in order.:D oh, labor type stuff~ blast the frame:shock: and paint the frame:bananatool:

I'll miss my garage:cry: and you guys

Holy cow that flooding must have been terrifying! Great ingenuity on the spring bushings, smarter not harder! Without a lift I'll probably end up hack sawing mine out, which will inevitably result in the last one not cooperating, taking an entire shop day to mangle :steamed:

I would be interested in seeing how you did the battery tray in your brother's jeep. I'm currently converting my '57 to a dauntless so I'm going to have to come up with a battery tray of some sort, and was initially thinking that the standard firewall spot is good enough. But, I hadn't even considered mounting it under the faux battery box lid! Very "military":bananatool:
