I'm hooking up my steering, and the new drag link end is much larger than the stock one. I went to the junkyard and got a pitman arm with a bigger hole, but it's not quite big enough. I probably need one off of a 1 ton ford/dodge truck, but the yard didnt have any.

Is there anyway to make the tapered hole in the pitman arm a bit bigger? How would I go about doing it? I'm pretty sure I read that a few of you guys have done this as part of a D30 swap.

Here is a site with the reamer you need.

I am in the same position as you. But the Frod pitman arm i have is a touch to large in the spline department for it to hook to the gear box. just fit but it is all the way to the top. I am getting a waggie arm, those tie rod ends are bigger than the ford one. I wouldnt ream out the CJ pitman arm, because there really isnt enoguh meat to it compared to this ford one i have. I would also suggest maybe getting a waggy arm, they have a bit more beef to ream out. i may ream mine out so i can use the GM tie rod end because it is longer then the waggie end at it will fit my drag link.

Thanks for the link. The pitman arm I got is off of a F250, so it's got a bit more metal on it than the CJ one. I saw one on a Dodge pickup that was much beefier, but I would have had to remove a whole bunch of stuff to get to it. I already tried to get a waggy one, but couldn't get my hands on one. None of the junkyards around here have any wagoneers in them.

The one I have should work once I get it reamed out though.

Cool. I was thinking it was a CJ arm to ream out. Did you already check the ford pitman arm to see if it fits? Make sure you tighten the pitman arm on the box. I thoguht mine would fit by just putting it on the splies, but when i tightened the nut on there, it went fully on to its stop, and the pitman arm was flopping. I would have had to shim it to get it to tighten, but then that would have put the pitman arm right up against the steering box housing :(

Also check the key ways. There are 4 eky ways. They are all equally spaced. You should have one aiming straight down the pitman arm, one spline off is OK. i had another arm that fit, but the key ways were way off and i would have had terrible time steering or getting it to work.

I haven't actually put it on yet, but I did notice that the 4 key ways are off a bit. I'll have to try it out. It's funny how something like this that you don't even think about being an issue can be such a stumbling block.
